Just as I was to drop my phone off at the SE service centre one of the consultants convinced me that a SW upgrade might not solve the problem.
So now I'm looking for a new phone....might just get the K700.

'might not' is the operative word here. Just because somebody told you otherwise, it doesn't follow that what he/she said is what's going to happen.
Unless the local
Service Center are run by thieves, It is safe to say that a firmware upgrade is a lot less costly that buying a new phone. Plus, how sure are you that the new phone that you are getting would be problem free.
Tell the service center folks what the problem is and they shouldn't charge you for the firmware upgrade if the problem persists.

I thought it might have something to do with the T300/T68i since they seem to use the same platform. So either I'm getting another phone or I do a firmware upgrade which kinda sucks because everything will be wiped out, especially the numbers in my phone book because they're about 300 on there.
So now you'd understand my hesitation about getting an upgrade.

Ring your provider. I have T68i with R2E, no probs, and I had R1G (I think) on my T300, no probs.
if its not them, save as many contacts to ya sim as you can, and go from there.

A simple firmware upgrade shouldn't erase any of your data. On older Ericsson phones and sometimes on the T68 this does happen.
Data erasure can happen if the service personnel does something else during or after the upgrade. They will warn you that this can happen. They do this because they don't want to be liable if and when it happens.
No, I don't understand your hesitation.

Since the T68i,
phones going through a firmware upgrade should retain all the data in their memory.
Unless the service center did a master reset before or after the upgrade.
