While they did the update, your firmware was corrupted. I have written a lot about it here at Esato (do a search). You have the right to have the phone fixed if under warranty. Take the phone to the company that sold it to you and they will send it to Sony Ericsson. If they cannot fix it, they will give you a new one.
The firmware you need to play mp3 as tones is R2V001. R2Nxxx won't work. When you turn the phone in, ask them to install R2V001 while it's sent to Sony Ericsson (R2AE033 isn't available yet for Vodafone and that's the only firmware that completely fixes the one second delay).

Thanks, I will take your advice and take it back to where it was serviced. I'm loathed the send the phone away though, as I'm not sure the CPWH will give me a replacement as my contract isnt with them, its with Singlepoint - half the problem i think! Singlepoint have given me SE's customer service number, I'm going to try my luck with them.
The ninth icon on my menu screen has reappeared this morning, some 3 or 4 days after the update - whats going on there? It was the Favourites icon that was missing, but is now back. I just purchased an MP3 ringtone from Vodafone which does work and is DRM encoded, but i thought i should be able to use the SE DRM tool to encode my own files to use on the phone? And the software is still slow.
Also, delivery reports from SMS messages now remain on screen until OK is selected, instead of displaying for a short time then disappearing. Is this a glitch or part of the new software?
Thanks again. I appreciate the help so far.

If you give ur phone to CPW and they can't sort it out onsite, then they will give u a replacement for the meantime as long as u give them a £50 deposit.
You just need the orginial receipt (doesn't have to be bought from CPW though).
