You can also try a utility from
http://www.spinwave.com to reduce the size of your GIF (there's a online demo for low compression, higher rates will require purchase). It does this simply by reducing the number of colours in the GIF, also will try and group colours together intelligently - see the results for yourself on their site.

Tricks for better looking 3k images:
To start with, if your image is bigger than 101x80, make it smaller *before* you make it to a gif.
Second, in Photoshop, convert to gif in two steps: First choose Index and the esato palette. Then convert to rgb and then choose Index again, but now choose 'exact colors' instead of the esato palette. This will remove the colors in the palette that are not used in the image. This can cut an image from eg 3.7k to 3.0k.

There is a way to access more compressed images! simply click "reduced image" link next to compression result you shouldn't be able to see, and reduced image appears in new window. BTW. After saving to your harddisk, u must rename it to gif.

thanks jas for a great tip!! it cut down the size of my pics to just 3k. may i just add that you can use the the "sharpen" filter in photoshop to further improve the picture quality and it didn't add too much to the file size.
