What about in future? Viruses having multi-format effects ie PPC & Symbian formats? & PC so if email is sent can spread throughout..

@knight, yeah ur likely to get it through bluetooth but as u have seen in this forum ppl ask for sites for "free" software and thats were ppl are more likely to get a VIRUS/TROJEN from a sis file claming to be one thing but is another!

Ok. I see you must be all newbies what viruses are concerned. I virus to be effective (ie spread) needs to access/change system files. Now on a pc (widows or otherwise) thous files are on a writabble media (hard drive) whereas on a symbian cellphone are rom (eeprom) based and can be changed only by "flashing".The cellphone copies during the startup process a fresh "system" to ram from the rom and so is erasing any virus.I have tried my self to write (c++) a virus for the S60 series but only works when the phone is not switched off and back on again. So stop worrying ! I agree, the virus threat is minimal at best with regards to phones.

Some viruses may need to be flashed into the phone, however what about trojans, say it executes & hides in background doing lts work, & it writes an auto boot thing for when the phone restarts...

Yes.You are right. And this is how the few so called viruses are operating on the S60.The problem is - because the routine is not part of the system it must be initiated manually or automaticaly (start up descriptor) and here is the problem.Who is going to start the virus to infect him self or if already "infected" the start up file can be deleted (in most cases is the only one anyway) and after off/on delete the virus. Now you only need one very short C++ or even java program to do this (if you can't do it manually). So one antivirus program and takes care off all the viruses there will/can ever be written for a S60 device! Now, no virus programmer nor any antivirus software company is prepared to invest time/money to develop/write a virus which has already a "cure". This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

Virusus on symbian phones are very possible, but the problem is how would they spread? spreading over tcp is unlikely as the amount of phones connected to the internet at any one time is miniscule compared to the amount of windows PCs, spreading over email is unlikely as most email addresses in an addressbook would be read by PC email clients not mobile phones (and besides you`d have to be pretty stupid to run an app which you recieved in an email from a stranger), spreading via bluetooth is impossible at the moment, and i cant see any reason why it would become possible in the future. The only real virus threat to your phone would be through "trojan horses" i.e. viruses concealed as normal apps and probably spread through warez sources. So the easy way to avoid them is- dont download warez, especially dont download apps from anywhere you dont trust.
