Just got off the phone to Sony Ericsson and they say the phone doesn't offer that function. Just picture caller ID on the internal screen.....???

i think the advertising was just to show that the phone offers an external colour screen - bum!
do any pictures at all display on the external screen?

Yes you can set a wallpaper for the external screen. However when you switch the phone off it'll disappear,
unless it is defined by a theme, then it does stay on.
