I think he removed the flip then cleaned the connectors. Not opened the keypad.

hi! i think cleaning the connectors will not suffice, because the real problem is when you press the keypad, if it is with the connectors connecting the keyped to the main unit then there should be no reaction/connection at all but since it isn't then it must be the "contacts" at the keypad itself.

It could be static dust have u tried to clean the connections with an elastic band, it worked on my t610 when the joystick and the other keys next to them stopped working (rub all gold connections with the elastic band inc.battery and sim (official advice from Orange)).
