You can use a DSS-25 or DSS-20 to do it or a T28 cable is more widely used.
You might as well reset the phone first though because you automatically lose everything when you flash the phone anyway.

Not every time, i upgraded my firmware and everything remained.
If you dont have the cable or synch station to do it at home, you could always try your local phone shop, like CPW.
