But UIQ is available only in the upper end segment. We are talking about a smartphone for the price of a K700! So far, only S60 Phones have managed to come to such a price level.

Which implies that the 'problem' is not with Symbian as a platform, but with how SE chooses to implement it.

While I am yet to use a Palm or MS OS on mobiles, the general impression I have from industry reviews is that Symbian is ahead of the pack, especially in its multi-tasking abilities. It also comes across as a very stable platform.

SE can choose to introduce a lower level of smartphones, similar to series 60 for those who do not really want a smartphone for serious work.

SE will never catch up with s60. S60 has about 10 times the current applictation support of UIQ. Even if comes out with a new OS, It will be way behind.

Lower end SE smartphones with touchscreen will come for sure, but some people are so naive thinking it will be P-series, stating it will come more than 2 P-phones this year. It's not going to happen IMO! I predict one new P-series phone and one completely new series. It would just be stupid to have the same name on them when it's directed att different market segments.

Aside from the stability, ease-of-use, expandability of an OS I think the software availability for the OS is equally as important when choosing the right OS. Windows might be full crap Mac OS is great and Unix is very stable but Windows still dominates because of the variety and abundance of software available for it. If SE decides to continue and improve on UIQ they probably will have to be more aggressive in the development of softwares for it.

Agree. One of the reasons that helps nokia s40 crap to hold on as the leader is that they got a whole lot of java games and apps. This message was posted from a WAP device
