I think the size of the lens does have an effect on picture quality though. A 2 or 3 megapixel camera phone will take worse pictures than the equivalent digital camera with it's larger lens, and the digicam would be more adaptable, like being more able to take macro pictures, more zoom capabilities, and extra features like being able to alter the exposure, exposure times, etc.

i dont mind having an intergrated device, lets say a phone and a camera BUT the camera has to be similar to my sony P120, 5 million pixils and all they settings it has.

@jagger
Understand what your saying but it's a natural progression for company's to try and get the upper hand on their competitors. It's just progress mate, the all in one device is here to stay, and will continue to improve with time.

couldn't agree more. this is why i have got a v3. i want a phone, i've got a 5mp digital camera so why would i want a subpar version on a phone?
Even when they have 5mp camera phones here (notice i say here, i know they're out in Japan), they're never going to be as good as a dedicated 5mp camera.End of the day its an add on to the primary use.
EDIT, an example: i have a DVD player with a built in freeview decoder and a dolby digital. well i know i have heard better sound reproduction, and from past DVD players i have had more functions and better stability.

No, the number of megapixels and size of the optical zoom does not govern the quality of a digital camera, there is far more to it than that.

'Convergence' as it is known, will be the key driver for the electonics industry for the next decade. It will be the key factor in determining which manufacturers prosper and which go the wall.

that seems to be the trend nowadays @gov
and like john says, you can have an 8 megapixel camera with god knows how much optical zoom and pay 699 bucks or you can have a 5 megapixel top notch carl zeiss lens with manual focus and shutter response etc etc and pay upwards of 2000 grand for it. which would a real enthusiast have and which would appeal more to the general consumer??
