to be frank i have nothing against having a camera shutter sound but what really annoys me is the shutter sound on the k700 !!
It sounds like a slap on the face or like something cracked in half ! The t610's camera sound is more pleasant and i wouldnt mind having that as the camera shutter sound even if i cant mute it..

And btw i'm running the r2ae and still can mute the sound so its not like the new firmwares cant. Just 1 or 2 versions in between could not but most can...either by putting phone in silent or setting ringtone volume to zero in profile.

I don't think it's the firmware. I think it's the phone itself (hardware). I think the first phones that were released in certain areas allows the firmware to control the shutter sound of the camera while the new ones don't allow it anymore regardless of what firmware you use.
Me and my brother got our K700i last september last year and we both can disable the shutter sound of our phones (we have used R2A and R2L). A friend of mine recently bought a K700i (R2L) and the shutter sound can't be disabled.

I very much doubt that Sony Ericsson mute the camera sound because it's a legal requirement in some countries- it's not a legal requirement in Australia, yet Sony Ericsson mute the camera sound on many (but not all) of their camera phones...
I think more than anything you will find that it is just Sony Ericsson and others trying to protect themselves legally!

I miss the ability to mute the camera sound, but as the father of a 16-month-old Son that is fully aware of the illegal use of camera phones, I'd prefer to see more manufacturers implement it!

Sony Ericsson and network operators customize a handset's firmware for specific networks or countries; vodafone is probably the best example- the customize phones EXTENSIVELY for their "vodafone live!" service!
I'm not sure on the exact procedure that Sony Ericsson and operators use to customize a handset's firmware, but enabling the "mute" feature of the camera is as simple as...

Of course, the tools required to do this are unavailable to the public and, like other manufacturers, Sony Ericsson goes to great lengths to minimize exposure "in the wild..."

It is a firmware issue. But for some people, even with up to date firmware they can still disable the sound. Its because of the territory the firmware is meant for.
Put simply, some countries dont allow it, some countries frown upon it - those are the ones with firmware that force the camera shutter sound.
Some countries ( like Portugal where Arez lives ) are fine about it, thats why even his new firmware still does not force the camera shutter sound.
