Just to get the obvious things out of the way, are all your privacy settings in IE set to default level? Have you got all of the latest updates from Microsoft? I recall that I had to turn off IE's pop-up blocker to get it to work, if you've got XP SP2 you might want to check that too, as well as turning off windows firewall.
Likewise shut down any security apps that you might have running just to remove them from the equation.
Like I said, just trying to eliminate all of the obvious things first

Going to wait until I can use the old Pc at my parents with Win 98Se on. it's slow but has always done the update perfectly be it on my P900 or P910i

It works fine here on my notebook with windows 2000 servicepack 4 and mozilla firefox with java 5.0 update 2. It also works with IE, but only with the sun java 5.0 update 2 enabled and not the windows java vm.
Which servicepack do you have installed with your windows 2000 installation?
