Right. Prob of finding an emulator for gameboy for this OS is next to zero. Else go for linux, mamdrake or redhat. @djpowbelly, Do you know how to install linux? Mounting drives and swap space?

I use BeOS regularly, which means its successor - Zeta. It works great and does all the jobs I need it for. Give it a try. The private Edition of the old 5.0 version is available for free. You can install it easily from your windows installation. It won't have all the drivers that are available and it can't handle more than 1 GB RAM, but you'll get an impression of the look and feel. If you like it, Zeta, the new version, is available from YellowTab for 69 to 99 Euros. Have fun :-) This message was posted from a T610

@djpowelly

I really think you need to acquire Win98SE from somewhere, I know (and respect!) the fact that you're not into file sharing so maybe you can get a very cheap copy from ebay or similar?

Linux still isn't straightforward yet, especially getting and installing drivers for any hardware that isn't supported natively. That's why I suggested mandrake, if you get the full installation version it comes with suitable drivers for loads of different hardware already built in.

It's a nice little project to undertake if you have the time and inclination but if you need a pc up and running quickly and easily, Linux really isn't the answer. Yet...

On one hand iīd advice you to try getting an older version of Mandrake (i ran 6.0 last time a fiddled with Linux) Since it is from the same era as your box, chances are it will be slimmer and run smoother at the cost of not being as flashy and not having the same support for different hardware. The latest version is more user friendly, but also more resource-hungry. And if youīre not familiar with Linux you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices you donīt really know how to handle..
Personally i run FreeBSD since -99/00 and prefer it over Linux, since i have much much more control over what it does, but itīs not really an alternative iīd recommend to someone unfamiliar to Unix/Linux.
With all due respect, i donīt see BeOS as a serious alternative, judging by the version i tried a couple of years ago. Put bluntly i found it the dodo of OSīs..

Aaaaahhhhh! FreeBSD...

I've lost count of the number of headaches I've had and the amount of Lager I've consumed playing about with that beast

Cracking little OS though...

Seriously mate, you should look at 98se or 95 or NT to get things done. This message was posted from a K500

@ govi: BeOS 5 can't handle more than 1 GB of RAM and no more than 120 GB HDD, but both limitations aren't existent anymore in Zeta. I really like it a lot and I am sure that it's easier to use for the home user than Linux. It brings an office, media player, cd burner, internet applications and much more. In fact, I don't use Windows anymore since I have Zeta. It's a big improvement over the old BeOS, technically spoken. There will be a live CD on some computer magazines in April.
