As much as everybody advocates unlocking and ridding yourself of the vodafone software, i would advise you to get used to the phone as it is first. That way, if there are any bugs or anything at all that might require vodafones help, you won't have to shell out even more money to 'brand it backwards' again. Is your phone insured? Remember your insurance won't pay for malfuntioning if you messed with the software yourself.
Apart from that it never hurts to get to know your phone first, then make a decision on its future
Vodafone live portal:
It offers a range of games, tones, news channels, birthday calendar, streetmaps,sports etc etc. Once again, before dissing it, have a close look. Some of the stuff is free (although most isn't), some of the stuff is good, some of it is utter crap
If you took out a Vodafone Live! data subscription, you might want to read the terms again. Many of them have an 'allowance' for Vodafone live content use, which will allow you to get some stuff without getting a higher bill.
You will still have access after changing the firmware by the way, if done rightly
(prepare for paying extra credits to get it to work though)
And also check if you have free unlimited browsing outside the Vodafone live portal. Certain locations (countries) have unlimited browsing within the portal and paid browsing outside the portal. Worth double checking

V800 themes can be found on
www.mobile9.com under gallery, look for themes and select your phone model. Themes are free and new ones are added every day.

there's a thread on this in the software section already, but a short recap: before you do anything at all,
download the USB flash drive5rs. Without these your cable will not work.
When the drivers are installed properly, your upgrade should work fine
and yes they mean the 'power on' button when the say 'power on', and they mean the navigation key to the left when they say '

I was very pleased with my V800 until I realised that it did not seem capable of making or receiving calls on the GSM network which rather limits its utility. I assume that it is a fault and I am getting the handset replaced but it is annoying all the same.
Vodafone live is in my opinion a complete waste of time and money and vodafone have got it so wrong as to be criminal. Not only do you ahve to pay for most of the content twice, one for data and once for the upfront charge but also most of the content is complete and utter tat anyway and on top of all that the service is completely unreliable and pages fail to load for me about 50% of the time. Needless to say I don't visit it much anymore.
Apart from my Network Access problems I like the build and design of the V800. The software is OK even with all the wasted vodafone shortcuts and bloatware. There are some annoying omissions and bugs however which no doubt you will discover. I would expect them to be solved in future firmware but obviously non techies are forced to live with it.
The camera is fair. Good picture size but the quality isn't great. The video quality is much as you would expect.
My honest opinion having lived with the phone and 3G for a few weeks now is that the phone companies have really missed a trick with 3G and are in danger of shooting themselves very badly in the foot. Useless portals liek Vodafone live and the ability to download ringtones is not going to sell 3g to new customers and not going to keep present 3G customers.
Orange is the only company who seems to be really intelligently marketing 3g with their Buy one get one free campaign. This is a great idea because it means from day one you can use that video calls with at least one other person. I have yet to use it once on my phone because I don't know anyone else who has one.

I am somewhat inclined to agree with bobajobbob (sure hope I spelled that right) that the vodafone portal does not offer anything to give the mature customer the WOW-factor, hence the 'future of 3G' seems limited to teens.
Personally I'd like to see some more business aimed content (news, weather, sports and restaurtant guides aren't quite enough for me) and I'd like to be able to browse to any site offering the content I want without having to pay extra for the data traffic.......this will ultimately drive me away from vodafone completely as I feel I pay them more than enough already on a monthly basis, to be allowed to at least browse where I want when i want.
Still the voda live portal offers you a feel of what 3G can do, shame it's poorly exploited and well overpriced. The possibilities are endless, but somebody needs to set it up properly and market the services and phones to those people who have the paycheck to afford a phone like this and the bill it generates every month. Hint to vodafone: my 16 yr old nephew is not who you should be aiming for.
Having that said, and having put myself past the useless ringtones/games/videoclips or britney spears, there is the wee bit of content that i actually use
The live portal is a good place tio get a taste of 3G though and as good a place as any to get to know the phone and the functions a bit
As for video calling.... gotta say I do make the odd videocall even though I got my phone independantly of anybody else. Think it's a fabulous feature at that, allows me talk to me (mostly) Asian buddies who already have the technology, and my dad who's also jumped on the bandwagon

Ive just tried out a v800 on vodafone for 2 weeks after buying out my 3g contract with Orange. I was having so many problems with my 6630 on Orange - its still with nokia having a software upgrade. There were other tech support issues aswell. I was mis sold with vodafone and my price plan worked out £25 a month dearer than on Orange. Their customer services left a lot to be desired too. Absolutely diabolical in fact! Thats why Ive just ported back to Orange. A case of better the devil you know!
