Before I got my k700 I called up t-mob and they told me they were 900 not 850. For some reason when I insert a cingular sim the k700 freezes or runs very slow. Works fine on t-mob. Might be my phone, but it's something to look into before choosing a network. This message was posted from a K700i

I often see questions about various 'carriers' in the US releasing (or not) certain phones...

Is it not possible to buy whatever phone you want (SIM-free from an independent retailer) and then just use whatever SIM card you want from whichever network/carrier you prefer?

This is very common practice in Europe, but from what I read, seems rare in the US.

Is that right? And if so, why?

@Jool:
The infrastructure of US carriers was based on NAMPS, TDMA, CDMA, and now CCDMA... GSM technology just recently crossed the pond (several years ago!), thus the reason behind the lack of network compabatabilities between US and Europe. Now, TMobile and few other carriers are penetrating the US market with GSM services, they make it possible to purchase any SIM-free GSM phone; which will work on their networks... even if they dont offer some particular phones..

I purchased a K750i and activated with TMobile; works like a charm (except for Tzones). The downside is, their networks are still full of holes; but they are rapidly filling those holes with cell sites!!

Another reason people are waiting for carriers to "introduce" phones is because said carriers subsidize handsets - most often they subsidize handsets that you buy when you extend your contract for another 12/24 months.

Of the two remaining big GSM carriers in the US T-mobile is the smallest, with the sorriest selection of handsets (with the exception, maybe, of the Danger) and with the slowest network (no 3G yet, whereas both big CDMA players and Cingular have started offering 3G services).

At least they are cheap (T-mobile). I am paying $10/mo for unlimited GPRS data which is not bad and $50/mo for 1000 min, free long distance (another american "invention" due to mobile numbers having the same prefix as landlines), free roaming within the US, and free calls within the T-mobile network.

I live in Manhattan New York. I got a K750i Exactly one month ago. I've got a 1gb sony high speed card...everything works great.

The k750i works in New York for the individual who asked.

IN FACT MY SERVICE WORKS IN SOME SUBWAY TRAINS AND IN MOST BASEMENTS...

COMPLAINT - the t-zones home page is blank LMAO

@stillhere,
The reason for tzones not working (blank page!) is because the K750i settings on the TMobile websites arent available for that phone.. You must select a phone on their website, and if it doesnt match your handset then Tzones is a blank page.. they might fix that in the future (dont hold your breath!)... It is useless for me !! but to have $4.99/mo. internet access is pretty decent..

1) Where did you buy you K750i, and for how much ? I'm going to live in the US, starting October, and am wondering if I should buy my K750i in the US or in Europe (where I'm now).
I can have it for 269Euros (350$ US) with an renewal of my subscription (that I'll give to my father).
I don't mind having to subscribe if in the US when buying the phone, if I can have a rebate at the same time (current pratice here in Europe, you usually save 200$ on the phone if applying for a new subscription)
2) would you recommend T-mobile or Cingular, in terms of offer & quality of service ? (I'll be in the DC area)

Thanks in advance,

Eya
