I think most of the problems have been resolved in more recent versions of AOL broadband connectivity services. The main problem is that in older versions of AOL broadband, the AOL browser creates it's own network connection to the internet even if you are already connected via the router or modem. Picture below:
The 'voyager modem connection' is the main connection. I establish this through the modem directly which means I don't have to use the AOL browser at all, I can just use firefox as normal.
The 'The Internet(2)' connection is established by the AOL browser, and it's this connection that some routers don't seem to like. As I said, more recent AOL broadband packs don't seem to use the secondary WAN connection, and so are probably much more compatible with a wider range of routers.
By the way, it has nothing to do with your version of the AOL software, it's to do with the modem / router, drivers and 'AOL connectivity services package'. I'm a beta tester for AOL and currently have the forthcoming service pack installed for AOL 9, it's made no difference to the WAN connection. AOL have started using different voyager modems now, that seems to make the diffrerence because, presumably, you get a revised version of the connectivity services.
