Hey TK, I know T-Mobile uses the 900-1900 bands in the US. Going back to the R3 is not going to gain you much if anything. Looking at the signal gain information on both phones. You are better off with the SE over the R3. The SE has a very slight advantage. I would try using the same sim in different phones. I use the k700i on the Cingular network and am very impressed with the reception / signal strength of this phone. Although Cingular uses the 850-1900 band I have not had any problem with receptions. I am an over the road trucker and use this phone around 3-4 hours per day up and down the highway and in rural / small towns all across the US. Just hang in there you will find the right combination.
