> Bill Gates sees mobile phones overtaking iPods
Bookmark topic
Wasn't it Bill Gates who allegedly said back in 1981, "640k should be anough for anybody". So I wouldn't take too much notice of his foresight!
Of course there will be convergence, there already is. The iPod has never just been a music player, it also stores your Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Alarms, Notes, a few simple Games, the photo edition stores 1000's of Photos, and its a portable hard-disk for any files you choose. It's essentially a simple organiser as well as music player.
And there will always be a market for simple gadgets, not everybody needs everything even todays mobile phones and music players offer,and making complex technology simple for the average Joe is where Apple excels. You can still buy dozens of different personal audio cassette players 20+ years after they came out, and they've hardly changed in features.
Bill's just a bit sour that Apple is getting so much positive press attention lately with the iPod and Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (while Windows users will have to wait at least another year for Longhorn which has already been cut-down from what was promised), his tablet PCs have so far been a failure and Windows is riddled with security bugs and viruses and getting increasingly negative press attention.
He's bound to say such things just to make himself feel better, and lets face it nobody knows what Apple is working on in it's R&D labs at the moment.

the only way I could see a Phone surpassing an iPod is if it had a changeable drive.
People like the change their phones now and then.
The iPod isn't an MP3 player anymore it's an icon. It's fashion.
Bill's an idiot. He should have said "the mobile phone will surpass the MP3 player"

I think you guys actually missed the speach that Steve Jobs made a few days ago..he himself dropped that the ipods stance looks like its coming to and end (in not so many words...)..but alot of people believe that has to do with the fact that the Motorola Itunes phone is on it way...
And also apple introduced 4.8 Itunes..which has video playback in the small little window...no a few people tried transferring those videos to there ipod and got the error message "Not compatible with this player"...which could mean nothing but could also mean that the video ipod is on its way..or they planning on dropping those videos on to the phone...

@fatreg, just because he's a trillionare it doesn't mean he's not stupid.
I mean, two things he might be smart in one area but it doesn't mean he's smart in others, and also, he got where he is by basically stealing other's Idea's.

FYI, calling someone stupid is an opinion. Same as saying someone is not stupid. So you can't impose your own opinions on someone unless they have none.

i dont thinc s gonna happen... mp3 phones´ll be too expensive in the beginning and wont have as much gbs. By the time phones´ll have the same gbs, ipod ´ll already have other functions, better design and cheaper price.
