I also had issues with NTFS. I decided to re-format the shared drive to FAT32 instead. I even had NTFS write access using
Captive
Quicker and easier.
Ubuntu was an easyinstall for me, even in my ancient thinkpad.

You don't have to worry about partitioning until you decide to install it.
Get a feel of the system first using the Live CD.
Enjoy.
EDIT
the live cd and the install cd are iso files.

Yes, you do the same process with both files. They're ISO files.
You can actually install a system using live CD, but I prefer using the install CD instead.
The live CD also contains some opensouce goodies for windows users. There's GIMP, OpenOffice and some more.

Click on generate checksums.
Then drag the ISO file into the program windows. It will then generate the checksum for the file. Compare those numbers with the checksum numbers published with the file you downloaded. (Those files with the .md5 extension)
Generating the checksums aren't instant. At least, not in my slowpoke machine.

I'll just stick more oar in (again)!
Mandriva Linux (formally Mandrake Linux):
http://www.mandrivalinux.com/en-gb/
It is still free! If you go to the downloads section you can get the three CD set by clicking on the 'Download from public ftp mirrors' link. You don't have to join the 'Mandriva Club' either, just click on one of the mirror links and you'll get taken to the download pages.
It's also worth mentioning that you don't need all three CDs to install it, only the first. The other two CDs contain applications such as Open office and GIMP (photo editing software) but if you get all three CDs, the installer will preinstall any or all of these apps for you.
It's my favourite Linux distro, very easy to install and configure

Yippeee! I've just been donated an old Athlon machine so I've stuck Mandrake Linux on it! This is my first ever Esato post from a Linux Box

Here's a couple of screenshots:

If anyone is thinking of installing Linux and would like to see more, bigger and better screenshots first let me know
