Well, to choose the last known good configuration, reboot your PC and keep tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Eventually, a menu will appear where you can select 'last known good configuration'.
Depending on your PC, you might get a 'boot menu' before the start-up menu. If you do, just select to boot from the hard drive and keep tapping F8 immediately.
One more thing you can try before you reinstall and lose everything
Click on 'start', click on 'run' and type in 'sfc /scannow' (without the quotes).
This will check that all of your system files are present and correct. If they're not, it'll ask you to put the XP disk in and replace them. It doesn't work very often but it always worth a try.

do a windows update if you didnt do that before. also do some simple tasks on your pc like defragment it. if nothing works then back up all work on both hard drives and format your hard drive (both) then re install windows.

Sexy! You should have just reinstalled windows without formatting! ;-)
Now, if your pc is screwed horribly, since you have backed up, do a format and a clean install. I personally dont like system recovered from a heavy mess up. It never feels good as a cleanly installed system!
