if they are both windows based systems then Remote Desktop is the easiest option. It should be built into most windows systems by default.

i'm using remote administrator after Gigs siad it and it works fine, can now get my music from my desktop to play using my laptop.

ya i just downloaded logmein.com and it looks great, im a bit worried tho cos it askes you to accept an aplication then your starting the program, not sure if this be alowed on collage PC's will try 2moro tho.

RAdmin (Remote Administrator) is pretty simple to use, you have a login client software you use which is as simple as putting in the IP of your machine (or address if you use something like no-ip) and the port to connect on.
On your home machine you have a service installed on XP, and you can also configure the port that you use. Shouldn't be any issue using the viewer in a non admin login as long as you have the ability to install programs. (you don't need to install the service on the machine you're trying to view from)
Then after that you use it as you would your PC. Though some things have to be done through the menu (ctrl alt del for example)
It'll work on any port on your machine though so if your uni blocks ports then you could just use port 80 or anything else common.
