the MPM has nothing to do with the dial-up processes (for CSD/GSM data connections) or GPRS connections.

in fact, you can use your phone as a modem without installing ANY of the software/drivers from SE.

@johntofaz
from your description, the first thing that comes to mind is that you're not subscribed to your SP's data services (CSD/GSM data). In the case of GPRS, there's no dial-up to your ISP because your mobile phone SP is also your ISP.

Please, verify from your SP that you are indeed subscribed to CSD/GSM data if you want to connect to AOL.

I am having the same exact problem as johntofaz... i'm trying to do the same exact thing for the same reason.. GPRS data is too expensive! I too have AT&T service in the philly area. for those who don't know AT&T service, just to clarify, AT&T service automatically includes GPRS data service along with your GSM/voice plan. it just costs more than if you were to actually subscribe to a data plan.

Now back to the problem. Johntofaz... i am positive that it's not because of signal strength that we are unable to connect to an ISP. if you just dial up the access number on your phone you will be able to hear the modem pick up and try to hand shake.

I am running win2k on a vaio. i've installed all of the sony ericsson drivers and rather than connecting with a cable i'm doing it over bluetooth (YAY wireless and only $40!) . But i am in the same situation. modem is installed correctly, recognized and will dial to the ISP when i want it to but i always get a no response error message.

if ANYBODY can help. PLEASE DO! and to make this clear.. i do not want to connect via GPRS. i want to use my phone as if it were a 28.8k voice modem popped into your PC/laptop. so essentially it is using voice minutes over regular GSM and not GPRS/data which i gotta pay big bucks for. anyways, if anyone has any info.. please help!! thanks

@moogoo,

I heard the AT&T disable their DUN gateway to regular land line so only via GPRS using their special *99# access number or somethin' similar to that.

@johntofaz

SonyEricsson has crippled GSM Dial Up Networking over the ATT GSM system using the T68i. GPRS is a metered and expensive service, that is why ATT had Ericsson cripple the Dial Up. The T68i modem will execute the AT commands just fine and the phone will connect to the dialed line but the T68i modem will not provide a carrier, hence a disconnect. This information can be verified at the SonyEricsson web site. Go to Global Support, Solution finder, and type in "modem will not connect". They will tell you the T68i is not supported. Probably of no suprise to you. By reading the SonyEricsson installation help files it is clear that both the T68i and PDA's were intended to be able to CSD dial up. If PDA's can do it, and I think they can, then it is clearly a T68i inhibit.

@Gowin
Please stop telling people the T68i will DUN over CSD by subscribing to CSD. The SONYERICSSON T68i will not do it "AS CONFIGURED" out of the box without hacking.

@All with the problem
I was able to accomplish CSD DUN with my ISP using the T68i for 2 calls just as advertised. The phone then, without cause, became "inoperative". I was unable to determine what caused this however it is my belief this was not a quirk. The phone had to go back for replacement.

Summary: ATT screwed us!

@rvc
it is incorrect to say the CSD is not supported by the T68i. if CSD is not supported by your network (say AT&T) then it would simply not work on your phone.

again, the t68 supports the following data services:
GSM Circuit Switch Data: 14.4kbps
HSCSD Circuit Switch Data: 28.8kbps
GPRS 3+1 timeslot: 40.3kbps

but these are network dependent.

no hacking is needed. of course, configuring is required. (i never said it would work out of the box)

@Gowin
Thanks for the reply.
I concur.
ATT GSM network does support GSM CSD.
ATT GSM network does support HSCSD.
ATT GSM network does support GPRS.
I need to rephrase more accurately.
The Sony Ericsson T68i / ATT network/driver 1.5.2 will not CONNECT as a modem using the published ATD####### command. It will however connect using the *99***X# command.
What this really boils down to is....
If you want to use your bucket of GSM minutes for data, ATT ain't gonna let ya do it!
If you want to pay for your data communications by the byte, ATT will welcome you with open arms.

I too, joined AT&T recently with an Ericsson T68i mobile and have experienced the exact same problem of not being able to use my dial up ISP through GSM instead of AT&T's plan of paying by the KB (which is only 6/10 of a cent per KB not $4, at least with my plan). Of course still paying for the KB sucks moose and I hate it.

Now that I read your post that AT&T deliberately set it up that we can't access our dial-up ISPs through the T68i, I called them to verify. I called AT&T data service technical support (not the dweebs on the 611 line because they don't know anything) and asked them if this was true. Lo and behold the woman said that AT&T GSM (towers or phones-not sure which) were not configued for ciruit switch data mode, which allows voice transmissions to become data transmissions. Nor does it seem that they will be doing this anytime soon. The only thing that she said we can hope for is a wireless internet plan that will have unlimited data for a flat monthly fee.

Thanks AT&T for screwing us over. Somebody should start a class action suit against AT&T for trying to keep a monopoly on their wireless internet service.
