I've found that the battery life is extended with the flip off too - removed it a few months ago now and still glad I did it.

Makes sense.
This way you don't press keys accidentally (i.e. in your pocket) that keep "waking up" the os from the low power mode.

I use the thumboard a lot so it is more practical for me to keep keypad attached. Also, I still like to use the phone as a phone so the keypad still makes me feel like I'm doing that. The thickness is a disadvantage though.

Flip OFF or not.. Screem Guardz a must
I too feel.. singlehand comfort, for sum1 with clumsy thumbs (like mine) .. Using the phys.cal flip is better.
Moreover, adding all doz Vernacular Hindi, Cuss n Swear words would be a drag.
Unless

thinks of India as important enuf to develop a Dict.nary & Multitap for Indian Lang.
I "completely" fail to understand how flip removed helps batt.?
Plus, I got the Jog Dial on the P8 & now on S7 in trouble with over use.
Have to use P910 more Judiciously..

The processors on smartphones drop the clock speed to save power if the workload is not high.
My guess is that pressing a button requests the processor to wake up and increase clock speed. Besides, the OS responds with a screen request, so there is definately more power spent.

@_LAU_: Yeah.. Got that Thanx.. I too thought so but meant there could be occasions (though rare I must admit) when Communi Cam or Homepage Button OR Jog Dial get bumped (un.intentionaly) thus making the OS call the Standby Screen

Well, for what it's worth, I've re-attached my flip, six weeks after taking it off.
I persisted with the virtual QWERTY keypad and screenwriting, but for me, the typing speeds I was able to achieve were simply nowhere near what I could do with the physical keypad.
Also, while the virtual keypad promised a lot, again I could never reach the speeds T9'ing that I could do with the physical flip.
Great pity, really -- IMHO the phone looks far more elegant with the flip off.

you are having wrong!! on p900 nothing happens if you lock the screen and then let it go into powersaving mode, so it should draw much less than having the keys on....

When I had the P800, I used it with the flip off... mainly because the keypad of the P800 was totally pointless, and inaccurate quite a few times.
When I got my P910i, I was so happy to finally have a hardware keypad... why? How many of you can T9 or multi-tap on the virtual screen... WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT?
I know I'm pretty good with the virtual screen (training with the P800) and the P910's implementation of the virtual keypad is so much better (bigger keys with wider spaces)... plus T9... but I'd be amazed at anyone who can SMS with one hand, without looking at their phone...using the virtual keypad.
