Seems that the general conclusion is that the p990 has improved quite dramatically. Can anyone add further to this thread especially now that r6 firmware is here. Also, anyone aware of a place to find a sim free unit as cheap as possible. The cheapest i found was 268 uk pound.I'm definately leaning towards getting one but just wanna evaluate more first.Cheers.

Please post at SE dev forum to let SE know your opinion on their supposed decision to stop developing further firmware for P990.
http://developer.sonyericsson.com/thread.jspa?threadID=39963

On a different note, the P1 will not be any different than the P990 except that it will take longer for the memory leak to show itself. I strongly suggest that you skip on the P1 and wait for a Symbian 9.5 device unless you want to experience the sad P990 feelings all over again.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Info/Memory Leak
From UIQ3 open-source software

Garbarge Collector

Symbian OS uses a Garbage Collector as memory manager - in theory this should ease programming.

However Until Symbian 9.5 Symbian only uses an inferior non moving collector. (To be fair: moving collectors don't go well with programming languages which support pointer arithmetic)

With a non moving collector memory becomes fragmented into ever smaller parts until larger memory requests cannot be satisfied any more. To make matter worse: Fragmentation happens a lot quicker of only little free space is available - Which is the case for early UIQ3 phones.

This leads to the dreaded "Restart to improve performance" as restarting is the ultimate way to reclaim and compact all memory. Just ending all programs won't help since there are quite a few programs on the phone which will never end.

As mentioned Symbian 9.5 rectifies this shortcomings and now uses a moving collector which will be able to re-arrange memory so that free memory will be available as one great continues lump.

XIP or the lack of it

Prior to SymbianOS 9.0, many Symbian devices used XIP (eXecute In Place) NOR based memory, which mean nothing had to be loaded into RAM to execute, but this came at the cost of very slow write times. Starting with 9.0, most devices moved to a NAND based memory system, which does not support XIP, and so EVERYTHING has to be loaded into RAM (and kept there) in order to execute. That's why it takes over 40MB of RAM to run the system, as everything is kept at all times.

If I could pay someone to swap me their N95 I would.

The p990i is a turkey, after owning a p800, p900 and p910, I loved them all, but i hate my p990i.

SEUS also bricked it and I had to send if off under warranty once already, it still doesn't work very well, battery life is awful and the software is far too muddled.

. . .

Phone dealers in your area are not accepting trade-ins? If I'm not happy with a phone then I will simply not keep it. I'd rather trade it in at a loss than let it produce more stomach ulcers.

Well, after the SE announcement today I don't think anything else needs to be said.
I am not satisfied at all with my P990 and thanks to SE will never be. From now on I will prefer to be a customer to a company that gives a little bit of respect to its customers and supports its products. Oh, and that company should definitely know what state their product is in, not like SE who tells us a bedtime story and even believes in it.

Latest developments say that there may yet be hope. It seems that the uproar may have changed SE's decision and reconsider a new fw for the P990. We'll know more next week.

We should try our best to make SE continue P990 support specially in memory management area, but I was extremely happy with my P990 from the very first day and still am. Specially after the last fw because now the browsing is superb, wlan very stable and camera better than ever. And all other features work as they should.
