Not that necessary exactly. There could be some bug fixes. The handling is the same.
My first R380s was lost years ago. Got another one and had it upgraded to R380e software later. Icons were changed a bit mordern style. A new application Inknote like P800 Jotter was added. A new game Tetris was also included, but I enjoy the old game much more than playing Tetris with stylus.

in the late 80s, beginning of the 90s the first Ericsson GSM phones came... "Hotline" was a series of the first handheld phones from Ericsson, first this phone was made for the NMT network, but a GSM version was also made. So this was one of the first with SIM card slot since NMT phones doesn't use SIM cards.

@bobafett: Oops, I meant to write "was" and not "waqs"
BTW I wouldn't call r520 old... atleast not in comparison with GH97 and so on...
@Cytech: Thanx, it would be fun to have one of these really old GSMs for the fun of it. However they are pretty useless without a SIMslot.
What your'e saying is that the phones needed SIM cards all from the beginning?
I thought the really old GSM phones didn't use SIM cards
