@whizkidd, I don't see your point.
Sony may have different products but each are handled by different department with different teams for marketing, research and manufacturing. Even SonyEricsson can be considered as a different company.

The fundamental difference between Nokia and SE is that Nokia's core biz if phones. Pure and simple. They have the highest margins on their phones which is why they can be sometimes cheaper than their competitors. On the other hand, Ericsson's core biz is the network infrasutructure. Only Siemens is their REAL competition. Nokia and Ericsson(minus Sony at the time) did what is natural to do, which is to develop network infrastructure systems (Nokia) and mobiles (Ericsson). One reason for this is that it allows them to sell more of their core products and to influence standards. In the early WAP days, Nokia's WAP did not work with Ericsson WAP because of standards incompatibility, so the customers were foreced to choose early on. Some people had two phones, one from Ericsson and one from Nokia. Once Ericsson brought Sony on-board things changed. Ericsson, which makes great handsets from a technical point of view, was now teamed up with the worlds consumer electronic leader. This was supposed to be a combination that could not miss. However it has not always worked out this way, but it looks like the turn around has come and SE will finally make a profit and realize its potential.
P.S. Whizkidd, being that you like Nokia's market strategy, what do you perceive it to be?

Sony may create many departments but It's product always bears the name Sony. Sony has been in to every major field and has lost money on most. Read Focus by Al Ries for more. I am not saying this. Some experts in the field.

True, but Sony has been around for some time now and is obviously getting bigger. The reported losses are just part of some experimental stages. They have obviously gained now more than they have lost otherwise they would have closed a long time ago. They venture into a lot of different fields and are quite prominent in most of them and IMO they're very succesful.

I agree. I have been in confernces with Jurma and this is one of his key points that he stresses. Nokia has very few high end, non-smartphone phones. They are targeting the McDonald croud. SE on the other hand seems to be targeting a higher end market segment.
