It's happening in my city too. Ppl caring pda or communicator only to use the basic phone call or sms feature. What a waste! I prefer person who use his phone 2 the fullest.

I can agree to this that SE does not produce handsets that have worse (or better) quality than others. However, the general public perception of SE handset quality is still below Nokia and Samsung (at least in my part of the world)

Quote:I don't for a second think that Nokia is incapable of releasing a good smartphone nor do I think they are incompetent.

All I am saying is SE has more or less lost the high-end super phone race. I agree with you that this may have no impact because SE is focused on different direction.

Quote:one commentator suggested that it will present a real threat to the N series

I highly doubt it. Is there a rumor flying around that SE is dropping development of smartphone?

Quote:because it would be better to have multiple OS so as to confuse customers?

I am thinking more of having the same OS with little improvement since K700 days.

Quote:This has to be one of the silliest point people are raising today. What exactly are you expecting? Video recording is relatively poor across the board...

I think you are skirting the issue. It is the perception of "old" tech in SE phones. Most phones at K800 level has better much better video record support. You seems to be using the "I dont need it so it is not important" point. Well, I can also say photo is also crap compare to digital camera. Take away the camera and what is K800 left with?

Quote:The second concerning global market share is fairly straightforward; SE is a small company. Simply put SE don't have the capacity of the bigger players, this limits there overall ability to expand. As I said before, they are slowly expanding; both their profits and their portfolio.

I never said that SE is gonna fold. It will continue to survive. The way it is going seems to me that it is one of the also-ran.

Quote:The last point about accelerating faster than the incumbent is an interesting one. It assumes that the incumbent is doing poorly and not able to fend off competition.

I dont agree with this. The incumbent can be doing well but it cannot cover all its flanks with prowess. So there is always opportunity to chip away at the weaker flanks. Well, SE may not have the foresight to capitalise on these weaker spots.

Quote: but suffice to say the rest of the features don't show the D900 being 'stronger' than the K800.

Like much better video recording, tv-output, pdf/doc viewer and sleeker design and smaller size dont matter at all.

Quote:I can't really see anything that would make me think the N73 is 'stronger' than the K800.

How about a screen that is 40% bigger in terms of area, stereo speakers, much better video record, cheaper memory card, EDGE and lastly, here it comes... smartphone capability.

Quote:That one handset has more features isn't enough to sell a handset, if it were then we should see handsets like the N91, N80, TyTn, etc dominating the sales charts.

These handsets are definitely dominating the charts in their own segment. Just that SE do not have any phone in that segment.

Quote:Handsets such as the K750, W800, W810 and K800 have all proved very popular, consumers clearly like them.

Popular is a relative term. V3 was (and still is) popular and it elevate Motorola. Dont see K750/K800 doing the same to SE as SE market share barely budge. In term of sales, K750/W800 was as "popular" as the N70 (a more expensive phone)

That is when people got a lot of money to waste. They buy things that they won`t fully utilize just to look good.

A PDA would really get your attention compared to a Z600.

I am more into the specs that I can use rather than the looks...

personaly i choose SE for the simplicity of the fones. exactly the symbian is what keeps me away from nokia. i think i will never use all the features that it gives me but i think i will have to learn cuz i guess the OS is the future of mobile fones

You tell us? Can't see it myself. They had issues with the underlying Symbian OS (which also delayed all the Series 60 3rd Edition products) but UIQ3 should eventually prove itself as a viable competitor to S60 and WM. Not that I think the P990 will be able to do it, so they better release some new kit soon.

The W950 could be a surprise boost to UIQ but I'm not entirely convinced yet.

Quote:I am thinking more of having the same OS with little improvement since K700 days.

There are so many new parts of the OS that I don't know where to begin! Of course, the basic layout remains the same as you'd want. Do you expect a new revision of OS X or Windows to look totally brand new? The vast majority of users want familiarity - which is why they stuck with Nokia because every new handset worked the same, but the phone was a bit smaller and snazzier (and because in a subsidised market, you want to upgrade instead of buying a replacement battery for the perfectly good phone you already have).

I'd agree that good video would be nice, but in most cases Joe Public want to take photographs. Even ordinary digital cameras aren't great camcorders, and when we saw all those cheap MP4 cameras going on sale in gadget shops, nobody really bought them or used them. Part of the problem is the need to edit them, and how to show them to people. A photo can be printed - job done.

The N93 hooks up to a TV, but you'll still need a PC to edit something properly. Oh, and people usually hate watching other people's videos!

Quote:I never said that SE is gonna fold. It will continue to survive. The way it is going seems to me that it is one of the also-ran.

It must vary for different markets, but SE has done incredibly well here. Nokia will still be ahead for years, and if being second or third is a sign of failure then they may as well throw in the towel and let Nokia be the only company making mobile phones!

Quote:I dont agree with this. The incumbent can be doing well but it cannot cover all its flanks with prowess. So there is always opportunity to chip away at the weaker flanks. Well, SE may not have the foresight to capitalise on these weaker spots.

SE has always capitalised on the errors made by others; mainly Nokia. They've come out with phones packed with every feature available at the time - and left Nokia looking silly. Of course, Nokia didn't care because they had the means to sell the inferior phones in bigger numbers (reputation, marketing, better distribution channels and relationships with the networks).

SE caught Nokia napping for both music and imaging. See how they then tried to hit back with the N90 and N91 - both terrible products that bombed (in the UK, most networks didn't even take the phone on - leaving it to be bought by early adopters and Nokia-fans via the SIM free route). And remember the even worse attempt to compete with the W800 by recasing an old phone in orange, throwing in some headphones and a memory card? Come to think of it, Motorola were even worse with the ill-fated and total flop, the ROKR E1.

The Walkman succeeded and brought the brand back from near death. Apart from people wanting everything on their music player (the iPod users), the Walkman had many benefits. Even Apple must know that a lot of people don't need every track or video on their player - hence the new range of nano and Shuffle products released just this week. Of course, these all mean you have to carry that AND your phone.

Quote:Like much better video recording, tv-output, pdf/doc viewer and sleeker design and smaller size dont matter at all.

The D900 is a great phone, but the Samsung UI is still rather limited (even if it does use Flash to make it look snazzy). The K800 is like a smartphone - and you know what I mean by that statement I'm sure.

It has a decent email client, excellent web browser (mind you, I think the D900 also has NetFront), RSS reader that's tied in with the browser and OS - allowing scheduling. It has a fairly respectable collection of PIM functions, the excellent camera, a good media player (with some improvements over the pre Walkman 2.0 player phones), a great screen and decent Java implementation/APIs for game developers (in fact, the K750 was the first phone to please developers). This was because Sony Ericsson worked closely with the developers from an early stage. Now, the others have caught up to a certain extent - but SE took the iniative, rather like Ericsson did to get Bluetooth really happening in late 2000.

Quote:How about a screen that is 40% bigger in terms of area, stereo speakers, much better video record, cheaper memory card, EDGE and lastly, here it comes... smartphone capability.

Do you buy a 104 inch plasma TV and then put a QVGA picture on it? What's with physical screen sizes over resolution these days? Unless you have poor eyesight, why would you want bigger pixels?

As for smartphone capabilities; while you and I know what a smartphone is, most people don't use a tiny percentage of the features - and most don't add anything beyond what it ships with. So, in that respect, any 'closed' phone can do as much for these people (email, web, imaging, video). And when you can run pretty advanced Java applications, including SatNav, then it begins to blur even more.

Of course, for those people who know they want a smartphone, the K800 was never a consideration anyway - so why compare them?

"Like much better video recording, tv-output, pdf/doc viewer and sleeker design and smaller size dont matter at all. "

of course, size and design matter..but video recording, pdf viewing and tv output aren't exactly "up there" in what customer's want....the usual "can it play mp3's and record video's?" is still the main question of the day from customer's nowadays...

No matter how great a handset is, if it's too large or looks like a slab, then people look to other handsets...i'd say the general consumer is still playing catch up with what feature's handsets have available nowadays....

agreed for the most part

but UIQ.. i don't think it'll be able to do anything unless they launch a few solid all-in-one solutions to challenge nokia.. the p990, m600m w950i do not cut it IMO.. but that's the first wave hopefully the second wave will be great... but we won't see anything till January at the earliest i'm sure...

the n73 screen is impressive.. comparing to a k800 it's maybe a bit pixelated but on it's own no one would complain about the screen quality.. IMO

i would have loved SE to but in a screen that went to the outerrim of the lcd lens instead of a screen that though higher in quality is only .1mm bigger then the w810i

like a nice sized w900/s700 screen

screen size on the 6131 is good.. the quality is average... medicore/poor in sunlight and the screen is too bright imo. i like the n73 screen better then the 6131 screen.. main reasons ..10x better in direct sunlight and s60 let's you adjust the brightness.

maybe it's just s40.. i think it makes the icons look grainy
