It's called reducing the consumer surplus. They're basically trying to sell the same thing at different prices. Those willing to pay a premium for exclusivity will do so, enabling SE to reap larger profits. If the arc is not released, the minority willing to pay a higher price will only pay as much as everyone else.
Starbucks does it all the time. They charge you a premium for some sort of fancy latte, when the only difference compared to a less intricate beverage is some sort of syrup that costs them several cents per cup. It enables Starbucks to get more money out of those who can afford it.

Well seems like there are three main possible competitors to the Xperia Play
1. PSP2
2. Nintendo 3DS
3. Apple Iphone 5
I wonder what is in Xperia Play that could persuade consumers to buy it over those three.
