have you tried any Low-end

phones? it's so simple, it has a "nokia-like UI" but picture on the screen is finer albeit looses to low-mid

phones. so far it's so simple and easy to use, i guess people have difficuly trying SE low-ends because of the Nokia feaver of the so-called "easy to use" for it's low-ends that's why they could resist trying other alternatives

SE UI is in my view far more flexible than s40, and just as easy to use, so therefore SE low-end phones are easier to use and more useful than Nokia s40.
Then if you upgrade an SE to a mid-range, it still has the same menu so nothing new to learn, where as a Nokia s40 user upgrading to an s60 device has to learn the new layout.

I tell u what, when GSM was first intorduced in 1991 there were very few makers who grasped the early inituative and decided that they would get into cell phone manufacturing.
When the cell phone came to the masses around 1994/5 the only mane people were aware was NOKIA,and Nokia has made their UI in the way it is now.
SONY and ERICSSON came into exiatance in 2001 so I guess Nokia by then had established itself. So people had already grown used to the Nokia-type phones like options etc,so they find Nokia user-friendly.
I think that SE by now has realised that they need to make inroads into the entry level segment,so bet that forthcoming low-end SE phones will make SE a truly global competitor to Nokia.

@qvga, true, but SE now have enough support with JAVA that active standby is available through third party apps. I expect to see SE adopt active standby soon on non-smartphones.
But Nokia must get first credit for that I agree.
@mailboxmanoj, good points, however one thing to note, Ericsson UI was expanded upon rather than dropped completely to create the first picture phone (T68) UI, so they kept faith with Ericsson users while updating the UI to picture phone format. Menu layout and key functions where mostly the same, with appropriate additions for a picture phone.
So the current SE UI has elements that hark back to the original Ericsson phones.

dont forget that SE's UI boast of system transitions provided it have an organized yet logical icons and texts. agree with max, the upcoming Z750 sports new UI and the Java Platform 8. nokia will answer that in future with their S40 5th edition but nonetheless SE have already most smartphone features incorporated in JP-8 while nokia S40 non-os will have more things to learn from SE's i.e. incorporating animations in menu, Full, desktop-like view HTML browser with RSS(like Netfront),allowing unlimited ".jar" size for their phones. but still, SE have still things to learn from nokia like active standy etc.

I guess since the w810i has been on top of the charts for 2006 also it will go down as a classic for SE like the T610
