That may be your opinion, but I am still of the opinion that the majority of customers look at what they are buying when they choose a mobile phone. If they want a smartphone then they will buy one, if not then they won't. Simple as that.

Apart from the fact that the mobile market is not so easily categorised and the driving forces are more complex than simple comparisons. There is sometimes bizarre brand loyalty (admittedly Nokia are the main beneficiary of this) and the mass-market arguably purchase more on the basis of aesthetics (not a Nokia strongpoint anymore) and not functionality.
But, ref your point, mib, about the merging of Series 60/80/90 to cover a broader platform of handsets, I recently read (sorry I don't remember where) that this is exactly what
intends to do with UIQ 3.0. It is apparently a more malleable OS, that will allow it to be implemented in the mid-tier sector (T610>K700) as well as in their Smartphones. I think, therefore, that if this issue is a serious one for
(and I'm not sure that Nokia are their principal competitor, if you look at the market) then it would appear that they are taking steps to counter it.

You raise an important point, namely who SE see as their main competition. I think the mistake many make is in assuming that SE see Nokia as being their main rivals. I don't think this is the case at all; Nokia are so far ahead in terms of market share and sales that SE can't really view them as their main rival, rather other brands that are within SE's reach to outsell.
Conversely, if Nokia are trying to compete with SE then it perhaps indicates a level of worry from Nokia about SE's products. I would have thought, however, that Nokia is more concerned with Samsung than SE.

That new nokia, with leds on the size, is a teenager fone imo. Sometimes i do really make thoughts, if nokia design such fones for fun or do they launch it with serious hopes for a success.

i agree with u that Nokia will see Samsung & Moto as bigger threat than SE. However, imo the bigger threat to SE is Nokia.

Nokia is still the undisputed "LEADER" in the mobile industry ! They may lag in some quarters of 2004 with SE in terms of sales, but to correlate it's total # mobiles sold to date . . . I guess SE doesn't come even HALF, or a bit over it, say 55-60 % !

I don't think SE are naive enought to think that they are going to take Nokia's position any time soon, rather they would be looking to compete directly with those manufacturers who are nearer to them in terms of market share.
The majority of customers will probably not just compare SE and Nokia mobiles, I would imagine that they would look at a range of handsets from a range of manufacturers. To say that certain Nokia smartphones will be directly competing with certain SE non-smartphones seems rather silly to me. As I have said many times now, I believe that most customers are still not looking to buy a smartphone, which currently only constitute around 4% of the market. To make comparisons between two very different products isn't realistic.
