I have 2 friends that work for SonyEricsson and ST-Ericsson here in Sweden!
First: Gonna play with "Hallon" this weekend
Second: We talked a little about the U8500 platform he works with and the info was that it's not really optimized yet. They need to lower power consumtion and some other "greek" I could not understand. He also mentioned that Samsung has really put pressure on ST-Ericsson to deliver the U8500 platform for them to use this spring, with launch already in april/may. He also said that the platform will probably not be ready until Q3. Also SonyEricsson is looking to release dual-core phones but not until Q3.
I have to point out that he works for ST-Ericsson and he does not know all the details since it's all a secret but being involved in the development of U8500 gives him some descent know-how!
So according to him there "might" be a dual core from SE based on the U8500 platform in late summer this year.
The best of all this is that his wife works at SonyEricsson and I will have the chance to play around with "Hallon" all weekend, great fun!
All above is from a discussion we had on the phone, it's my interpretation of the phone call...it's NOT facts, but there might be some substance in it!
Will get back with a short summary of how "hallon" feels like this weekend...
You are very lucky !!! Hope you will have fun, and looking forward to your summ'.
But Samsung to have the U8550 wow that's an information,

but I think SE isn't going to use this chip for the maybe Xperia Neo, but for the 5.5inch device. Thx

Why does SE have to use U8500 when OMAP 4430 is readily available? Omap 4430 is almost as powerful as the ST-U8500. The specs of Omap 4 can be found at ti.com. Q3 is just too much wait. SE needs to present their flagship this year on MWC 2011, or else other companies will outshine them. Xperia Play and Halloon are not just enough, let alone the Xperia Arc. I really hope to see the Android 2.3 phone with dual-core processor and 16.43 megapixel camera announced at MWC 2011.

^It is just my assumption about the dual-core device from SE. Since according to him we will not see a dual-core smartphone from SE until Q3 and the time to optimize the U8500 platform, it is easy to think that the first device will be running U8500 under its hood. Plus, If SE is planning on using OMAP 4 to begin with, it should have been optimized, too, together with the U8500. But so far, we have not heard anything about OMAP 4 except for false rumours. The rest of my said post was about just about the need for a dual-core device from SE to be released as soon as possible....that's all.

TI OMAP4 is not as powerful as ST Ericsson U8500 and Samsung Orion. Mainly in graphics, as U8500 and Orion use the Mali 400 Quad Core GPU whereas OMAP 4 uses SGX540.
But still, overall the U8500 and Orion are equally powerful and OMAP4, Dual core Snapdragon, Tegra 2 are all inferior
