Well, as you can see, this is my first post on esato, but I hope I'll be of some help.
I currently work for O2 Retail, and have done so for around 6 months now. I'm also the owner of 3 O2 (contract) phones - 6310i on O2 Online 200, O2 XDA on Leisure Time & Data 5, SE P900 on O2 400 (with the last 2 having a staff discount).
OK, now the "All phones free" offer is still on. Basically it means you can get any phone (excluding some like XDA / XDA II) dependent on tariff. There are some phones you can get free on any tariff (Nokia 6100, 7210, Motorola E365, O2 X1, etc), some on O2 200 (7250i, T610, Z600, Samsung V200, etc) and some on O2 400 (P800/900, Samsung P400/E700, Nokia 8910(i), etc). We're never told when it's gonna end, rather "Offers valid from **/** until further notice". It's pretty good for our connections, but I guess all good things must come to an end.
As for the 3 month debate, I'm not sure what the legal deal is on that. I have only studied law for 1 year (last year) and it was mainly Scots' Law, but from what I understand if a condition is made clear to you before you agree to a contract then it is binding, as long as the court feels it was properly incorporated (though not necessarily written). However, as I say, I am no expert in this field. From O2's point of view, the retail stores are currently being told you can change down after 3, and most customer services representatives (in my experience) will hold you to it. Of course, you might get one who won't, and that'll be your luck. There is - naturally - a flip side, which you may or may not want to consider. Whenever you take a high value phone like a P900, and immediately change it down to Leisure Time you're causing the company a loss... making them less able to make such offers in the future. I guess I'm just being protective of the company, but seriously think about it.
Account management... well, that's a mixed bag. I know on the web-site it says two things which I've heard varying reports about. The "It normally takes 3 working days to process your request" thing. When I signed up for my XDA it did take around that time, although subsequently I've heard people say it takes weeks, or perhaps they never hear anything. I've just registered for the P900.. have to see what happens (though I guess it is the "festive period"). As for the paper bill: I still do get a paper bill after signing up, I have colleagues who don't and those who don't. I also have a friend who no longer does... I really don't know where the truth lies... It might depend on the person who processes it - who knows, eh?
Anyway, I sense I've just been rambling, but I hope I've done at least a little more than just confuse matters.
Cheers, and remember that you can ask me stuff about O2... though I don't guarantee an answer!

The cheapest O2 tariff is O2 Leisure Time at £15ppm. This gives you 500 mins. off peak to O2 mobiles & landlines, and 25 mins. off peak to other networks. No texts included in this tariff.
As for Data 5, this is no longer available on new connections, as of either October or November, can't remember which. It would give you 5MB of data for £12, on top of your voice plan. I took it because I got discount on it, which made it good sense. They do still offer Data 5, but only as a standalone data tariff. The price has actually reduced to £8ppm, which is pretty good. You won't be able to move down to this tariff, at least not within the first year. I think this is the case anyway. I enquired about it before regarding my XDA and was told " you can change the xda to a data only tariff but only if the contract has run its full 12 months". This situation was slightly different though, because the staff XDA price was dependent on tariff: voice tariff was £99, data-only made it £199, so this might've affected their reply. However, as I say, I don't believe you'll be able to do it, but if you can then great!
This page details the O2 data plans (with a heavy business focus):
http://www.o2.co.uk/business/tariffs/datatariffs/0,,203,00.html
I think (if my memory serves me correctly) that any calls made from a data-only tariff are charged at the prevailing rate for O2 100 (10p anytime O2 & landlines, 40p anytime X-net).
Oh, and something else, I remember a discussion on this thread about O2 customer services call charges. O2 contracts (well, certainly those taken out from O2 directly) do include calls to 0870 calls... also, there is no 50p per minute charge once you're connected. You'd be right in saying that calls to O2 Online customer services are charged at 50ppm, but that's an 090 number, so does NOT affect calls to normal customer services (for customers connected to the DISE & Geneva billing systems).
Cheers guys!

Man many thanks for all the information - very useful.
Seems to me that when one phones O2 CS, the IT systems do not seem to include info on when you started the contract and therefore in some cases the CS person will be happy to reduce the tariff to £15/£16 (off peak/peak) while in other cases they wont as they know that the P900 is a newish phone. I found that woman CS persons work harder to please (!!!) and therfore more likely to change the tariff.

Does anyone know:
a) Whether Vodafone stores still offer price matching on local handsets
b) Whether they have a minimum term on a fixed tariff if you buy direct from themselves?
When I got my T68m they had it in the shop for £199 but I got it for free due to price matching, and I'm pretty sure I didn't have to stick to the tariff I wanted either...just an idea of getting around the O2 issue...

@jah
As far as I'm aware, CSRs can view when you started your contract, but it's probably in a different menu or something, so sometimes if they're lazy the won't even check... other times they will. I think someone might've hinted at it before, but O2 Account Management (www.accountmanagement.o2.co.uk) does have a tariff change option. If you can get registered for that then that might be a good way to go about the tariff change. Even if you don't get it down before 3 months £270 over the year ain't too bad for such a phone, eh?
While I'm at it, can anyone tell me if there's any way to get Esato to send email messages to tell you a thread's been updated? I'm so used to it from HoFo that I can't be assed checking all the time!
Cheers!
