Yup, you are correct. Route66 is not as good as I was hoping. The
main thing which is great, is the fact that it is on the market and
TomTom isn't.

I purchased Route 66 over the counter today at RIA Technologies in Tottenham Court Road.
Overall I am pleased with its performance. Navigation is fine. Setup was easy without reference to the instructions. Everything worked first time.
My only complaints are the dial from Contacts feature which does not work. It will only import contacts that have an address entered, and then does not import phone numbers. Dialling POIs does seem to work OK. This is not a major problem as you can use the P910s handsfree dialling during navigation without causing an interruption. Incoming calls also work well.
Volume is limited by the phones speaker, its OK with the windows closed and music off but otherwise struggles.
My biggest complaint is the location finder which seems to pull up every "High Street" in the UK for you to scroll through. You can enter partial postcodes (ie the first bit) to get a limited number of streets to scroll through.
If Route 66 can fix these niggles and give us a downloadable speed camera POI database this product will be spot on.
Overall I am pleased and think that 200 pounds is good value - at least its in the shops unlike Tom Tom.

i have to agree, despite its short comings, at least its available and works to an acceptable level. tomtom have failed dismally in not getting their offering out for public consumptuion in time to be competition to R66. if you want GPS on a P910 you will get route 66, who then will shell out for tomtom when it eventually gets released??

I'll drive to Italy next week and I want to use Route66 as well. Too bad you only have the Benelux version, because I could test it for you.

While tomtom is the market leader im sure and looks good it has one major MAJOR problem. Its too f'ing expensive!!! I have a girlfriend, there is no way she would let me spend the sort of money tomtom is asking on a bit of software.
First there is the purchase of the actual app, from what TomTom have done so far you need to also pay for their bluetooth reciever, no software only option. So there is very little chance people will move from an existing program to tomtom. For most your money will get you just your country. tomtom and an offering from Route 66 covers all of europe.
Second, Traffic info is an additional extra. It also costs money for this from Wayfinder (which still dosnt work) but wayfinder charge £17 a years coverage of europe. tomtom charge £53 for a years coverage of europe. Route 66 includes this for free.
Third, speed cams. This is 100% free from Wayfinder (and covers all of europe) but not an option at present on Route 66. How much on Tomtom??? A whooping £46 a year. Better off getting yourself one of those new AA atlas's with speed cams included. I think thats about £10 for the book
Already TomTom is becoming very expensive to run per year. sure there is no annual subscription but if you want the latest maps you can pay for them (all map updates are included in Wayfinder but not available in Route 66).
Route 66 is deffinatly the budget of the bunch. You get traffic included for free and no running costs but there is a lack of speed cams and updates (to date Route 66 has not offered any map updates. Even when you buy the product it can easily be 12 months out of date). Wayfinder has an annual cost and running costs but is upto date as possible and TomTom while good is expensive.
I dont mind paying annual fees for decent sat nav. I just would not pay the fees TomTom are asking. They are too much, no if's no but's no justifying it, ITS JUST TOO MUCH TOMTOM!!!
Im sticking with wayfinder. I like updates. Route 66 is too budget for me and TomTom would mean my wife divorces me.

Route 66 working perfectly on P910i with Globalsat BT-338. Excellent software although haven't worked out how to get the voice directions to come through my bluetooth headset. Bluetooth voice calls whilst connected to gps work fine. A bit annoying that it doesn't tell you what exit to take at roundabaouts, more "After 100 yards turn left" instead of "At second exit turn left". Also I've already found the maps are out of date in two locations where I was driving in Scotland at the weekend.

i don't think tomtom's price will be the issue, just the fact that route 66 will have a foothold with P910 users. on a price issue Garmin is far more expensive than tomtom ( i know they are not in the running for P910 users ) i will say that when i purchased tomtom for my pda, i was able to get the software with an emtac receiver and not the tomtom battery melting receiver. i think you will be able to get software only, but at a later date. they also have a new receiver i think. tomtom may cost more than some but it is a better product. as to speed cams, i was shown a website that you download their locations from and just replace the folder in your tomtom files with it and you are updated. this cost nothing. same for those traffic lights with red light jumper cams.
