Can we consider that Sony doesn't make everything they sell? They often rebadge cheaper products from China/Taiwan to sell at different pricing points and for different markets - like cheap portable TVs, DVD players and VCRs (Does Sony still make any VCSs of their own?). With a company of its size, you can't expect everything to be perfect.
I would however say that in my experience, their televisions over the years haven't been anything special (as if you're paying more for the name than anything else).
Let's also consider that Sony Ericsson is a separate company!

IBM monitors, many of Unilevers' products aren't made by THOSE companies itself. Rather outsourced to other Cos./ regions for cost effectiveness or other strategic reasons. Though the Company may want them to follow certain Procedures, Standards... it may not happen in reality. China- am scared of coz I had many diff· experiences. Like TWO Seagate Barracuda's~ One of Singapore make & other I couldn't get but of Chinese make. In same PC (used in RAID), guess which developed Bad Sectors !

Sony is a big company turning out massive amounts of a very long line of products, some will therefore be faulty or even badly designed like any other company. The important factor here is Support generally well known and respected comapnies offer good support that is how they became well respected. So really IMHO people here should be focussing on how good sony (and SE) support services are.
