well just to compare the iPod Nano to the Sony NW-HD5
the Nano has a colour screen and is half the weight of the HD5 but.....
iPod Nano
90 x 40 x 7 mm
Sony HD5
90 x 56 x 14 mm
Twice as thick yet roughly the same size!!
Yet the Sony has a 20Gb HDD and the Nano only has up to 4Gb
Then theres the battery life. Sony has put up to 40 hours into theirs
Then theres the durabilty. the sony's Magnesium Alloy is strong light and almost scratch proof.

@50 cent
no aac is a decent format probably the best available except apple lossless which is great but the file sizes are huge
the sony one is something like atrac and is quite average and slow to encode and the results arent really worth the wait. unless its been changed since i last tried it a few years back

Think sony are now up to atrak 3. Previous iterations were on md and hi-md. Not tried at3 myself, but various reports i've read ranked it pretty poorly.

I have a 10GB second generation iPod (the one with the buttons around the wheel, it was the first iPod that officially worked with Windows). After 2.5 years, it's holding up really well. The chrome back has a few scratches, but the front is almost perfect, no major unsightly scratches, just a few hairline scratches but nothing that reduces the usability in the slightest.
As for the iPod nanos, I saw a few at the Apple store here in NYC, and they were all looking terrible compared to other iPod demo models. One of my friends on the other side of the country was complaining about how his nano was scratched when he was gently cleaning it with a microfiber cloth!
The iPod nano's front plastic is made from a softer material than regular iPods it seems.
