I personally don't find the K750 short on functionality. It has bucket loads.

Below is the list of things I use my K750 for:

to call people and message people (duh)
to send and receive email,
portable audio player, fm radio, music videos,
to browse the "real" web (using Opera Mini),
An always available digital camera and (sort of) camcorder,
File transfer between locations (cable and bluetooth),
GPRS modem for pda and laptop,
Personal Organiser
PC sync of contacts, organiser and calander items,
Alarm clock, watch, torch, calculator, voice recorder, stop watch
Games console (suits my basic needs - favourites are Asphalt Urban GT, Lemmings, Solitaire, Wordcraze, Space Invaders and topgun)

Via Java, I have the following oft used apps:
Units and measurements converter
file protect (to encrypt files in the K750 file system)
Java books created with tequilacat bookreader
Readmaniac for reading large text files

All the above is quickly accessible via the fully configurable activity menu and joystick menu. The audio/video, java, and phone/organiser sections of the phone run on different chips, so it is possible to minimise one to access another, a practical form of multitasking (if not actual multithreading).

I would say that is a reasonably flexible use of the K750 hardware! Well done SE engineers, I reckon.

Granted a smartphone can do shitloads more, but I'm pepared to wait 12 months to see if SE bring out a decent small form factor candybar UIQ3 phone - if they do it will be my next phone. Until then I'm happy to stick with my "inflexible" non-smartphone K750

For me the Nokia would lose out, despite it being a smart phone. Screen res is lower, the phone itself is bulkier and heavier, cam is located at the side (why?), internal memory is quite low, Nokia site says expandable memory up to only 1 GB and battery life is just plain anemic.

I don't like it's looks.

Now this is just my personal opinion, but I don't see any K750/W800 owners swapping their fone for a 3250. I sure won't.

In its standard form it doesnt have that much more functionality than the K750 just because its a smartphone, being a smartphone just gives you the option to add functionality by spending more money on applications.

One thing that nokia and series60 fans seem to allways have a hard time understanding, is the fact that the vast majority of mobile phone users have absolutely no use for the smartphone functionality of series60. They simply just want a nice looking, easy to operate phone, atmost with some fun features like camera, javagames, musicplayback etc. They dont need to install all kinds of applications, and most of them dont even know its possible on their series60 phones.

Mib1800, you say the nokias will allways win because of their smartphonefunctionality, but that is only true for you because smartphonefunctionality is a high priority to you. Its not true for the big majority of users who dont see smartphonefunctionality as a priority.

Some 80% of the nokia buyers do not buy nokias because of series60, but simply because of tradition (friends and family has nokia's, Id better get a nokia to) and good branding by Nokia. Most of them dont have the technical knowledge or interest in series60, and simply dont look elsewhere because nokia has done such a good job on branding the nokia name over the years. The nokia name is so well founded in consumers mind, that maybe 50% of all nokias being bought, are bought without any form of consious comparison has been made with alternatives.

In short, you put way to much emphasize on the smartphone aspect in respect to what the general consumer need or looks for when buying mobiles.

i think you have a point most users dont see a difference between a smartphone and se own operating system. i think most people buy phones based partly on what you suggest though i wouldnt agree with the high number you put on it and on good service in the past ie theyve used nokia before its been reliable why change
also you can t get away from deals esp in the uk, i know a number of people who taken whatever free phone is handed out as a result of some of the great cheap contracts on offer at the mom with half price line rentals double mins and text

USB 2.0 is valid as well. Its easier to stuff a USB 2.0 (with mini-port) in your pocket than a MS Duo Pro adapter. Besides unless the K750/W800 have BT v2.0+EDR then regular BT is slower than USB 2.0. Actually the Real support is form the firmware - software support at the core of the OS; well added in as a modular component that isnt capable to be seperated by the user. I cant stand RealPlayer, and I'm desperate that Nokia ditches them. Streaming media (audio/video) is great but through sites with rtsp:// and ending in .rmv (?) sucks. However more providers like Cingular recently are using Helix servers for streaming content - again were EDGE is a benefit compared to just GPRS; admitedly 3G is supreme. RTSP is created by RealNetworks and adopted by 3GPP/3GPP2.

Oh yeah AAC is a great codec, just remember whom put it on the map (Apple); at least on a wide scale. iPod/iTunes baby! I'm not too particular with audio codecs myself >> AAC + eAAC + MP3 is just fine by me.

BTW dbpoweramp ISNT free, a trial period ends in less than 30/90days. But If you do have such a free converter; well you know what I'm asking = pm, please.

Another note just how does one create ebooks from MS Word to be viewable in Tequila cat >> I'd love to give this a try on my 176x208 screen.

TransFlash kinda scares me though, no mention of maximum size & right now MS Duo Pro is at 2GB >> music phone the K750i wins hands down.

PS @max_wedge >>Man its scarry how you right, I can actually imagine a voice behind it. Even the tone is calm cool and collective. I love disagreeing with this guy because its always an intelligent converse.

i think the k750 kicks this phones ass on camera quality
and for that reason alone i dont intend buying any other phone this year even the mighty n90 just comes close to its qulality but doesnt beat it
PS
i only use the cam, listen to the radio while i wap or play games while i am listining to mp3 and ofcourse text and answere / make calls

couldnt care less for smartphones

i will only change for another sonyericsson s,k or w series phone when it come out with a bigger mp cam hopefully 3.2CCD with optical zoom

well i for one enjoy seeing mib1800 posts as its nice to see a little balance injected into the forum. its gets very boring just having everyone making excuses for se all the time, they do make mistakes and aint perfect, and the best way for any product or company to improve is to listen to its customer/ potential customers.
if they just listen to some of the apologises on this site theyd be out of business by now.
