Of course the GSM market is booming in USA because of Cingular, but still the majority belongs to CDMA.

thats crap... NOONE uses CDMA hardley anymore over here... they have no good phoens, and the service SUCKS... sprint and verizon (i believe verizon does) uses CDMA... and i iDEN... (nextel) and i get better service on my iDEN than any CDMA... however GSM towers over both of them and are way better... CDMA sucks...

Don't judge from your friends or from the people you know.
I am not making this up. GSM in USA is booming and more and more people move to Cingular and T-mobile where they are GSM.
But No1 in USA is Verison, which is.... CDMA. Sprint has a lot of customers and is.... CDMA. Nextel that just merget with Sprint is... iDen. US Cellular that is doing good too, is..... TDMA (I think).
As you can see my friend the majorith in North America is NOT GSM.
Read also these statistics:
http://www.gsmworld.com/news/statistics/pdf/gsma_stats_q1_05.pdf
Only 56 million GSM customers in USA and Canada combined at this moment.

Only Cingular and T-mobile are GSM in the states. And actually Cingular still has TDMA running although by 2007 (I think) they supposed to move everybody to GSM.
Sprint (together with Nextel), Verizon, and US Cellular have a HUGE cut of the pie in the states and none of them are GSM and of course cannot and will not move to GSM at this point.

Who is saying CRAP now, is a question for you to answer!

I wasnt judging by my FRIENDS... i was judging by my personal experience with each. i didnt realize that verizon was number 1... i read a different document that said cingular was number one... but i guess its verizon.

EVERY SINGLE cdma phone is shit though... the BEST cdma capable phone out there is the treos...
for everyday users and people who ONLY use their phone for calling, they have verizon. but for the people wehre features matter, depending on their business, eather get a nextel (iden, but not just any phone, a blackberry... the rest suck), or something on the GSM network...

@obsixx hahaha MANY of the people i know too think their phone is made by their service provider...
::asks my friend...:: "who makes your phone?" "Cingular" haha

I agree with you that all CDMA phones are crap. I am not saying the opposite.
I was just trying to stress out reality: THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IN USA DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT PHONES. That's why CDMA in USA is still No1. GSM is going strong, but it has a long way to go. If people in USA knew the power of GSM, all CDMA providers would be bankrupt by now, but they are not.

Totally true, us americans are just clueless when it comes to cell phones! I have to constantly explain to people about how the whole thing works... And almost all of the people i know think that their provider made the phone they use! :-/ This message was posted from a WAP device

@ T-Mobile

Get your facts right !!!

Cingular is the Top Banana when it comes to cell carriers. There is no carrier in the U.S. with more customers nor growth and muscle as Cingular. T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint all put together have to bow down to the Giant.

Are you kidding??????? T-Mobile is a problem for reception indoors, Sprint's audio is generally garbled and Verizon has constant dropped calls. If you have not sampled each of theses companies as a customer, you really can't comment. Believe me when I tell you that T-Mobile's reception is one of the worst and I can tell you that.

If you have to walk outside of your house because you only have one bar and can't hear the other party, that is ridiculous.

You happen to be talking with folks that have sampled all carriers and can give testimonials that are factual.

@EastCoastStar I know what you mean when you've tried other carriers. Cingular is the best in reception with absoloutely no doubt !

I'm glad that gelfen knows why the 850 band seems critical to users in the USA/Canada.

Actually AT&T released GSM AFTER they already had TDMA and it was a software/hardware (both) upgrade initially. I know this as a fact because Rogers AT&TWireless had teh same thing back in 2001 here in Canada - back then AT&T had a 31% voting stock in Rogers' Wireless network hence the merging of names back then and not now - they sold it back to Rogers.

Now; We did have original core network for GSM in Canada = Fido before the buyout by Rogers & raping of towers by Rogers - network integration. Not sure if Tmobile USA or originally Voicestream was the same way.

GSM850Mhz is more critical to us Canadians because after the merger - network integration is almost complete now nationwide - all EDGE capable towers are ONLY on the 850mhz band (2 minor unconfirmed by Rogers towers are offering EDGE on 1900Mhz in a remote location doesnt count!!)

Now that said, WLAN 802.11b will provide all I need for data access mobile while in the city.

It's a UMTS phone, supposed to be used where 3G can be used that is. Nice that you can roam UMTS phones to GSM, but it's mainly a UMTS phone, no?!
They might make a P990a version, but it will be late like the rest of the P-series was (atleast I think you americans get your Pxxxa phones later then europe and china?!).
Let's just hope that one will come, because america is a _huge_ market and I would make a P990a if I was CEO of Sony Ericsson (well not make it personally... obviously ).

Just wait and see.

It is funny when in office in the States I had my P900 on my desk, 9 out 10 people where telling me:
"Oh that's a nice phone. Who is your provider?"
I was saying, the phone is made by Sony Ericsson, and I used T-mobile as a SERVICE provider. And then I was getting this response:
"Cool, T-mobile makes some nice phones."

Go figure!

And you guys want a P990a??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......
I would say, the best thing you should pray, is companies to make quad band phones and not just tri-band US versions (850/1800/1900).

I predict that in a couple of years when GSM will pick even more in the States, and people get more familiar with the technology, then most companies will be making quad band phones.

Motorola makes plenty of quad band phones.

needs to get on board with this concept. Or wake up their Marketing Dept. form their deep sleep.

It's just plain foolish of :se; not to make quad band phones.

Cingular has the most customers of any U.S. carrier and uses the 850 band heavily. If made quad band phones, it would definitely with out a doubt see a huge increase in sales.
