Once its connected you should get a little phone icon in the taskbar, you can then right-click on it to get sync options. Your phone should also show up in explorer where you can browse your media files on the phone and memorystick.

'Should' being the operative word. Outlook sync has always been vital for me and I can relate to all the problems I've seen people post about here and on other sites. The Pxxxs are a 'mare in this respect.
Hours of p*ssing about following other people's solutions, trying other sync stations and phoning SE support achieved zilch. I eventually, and with great difficulty, uninstalled XP-SP2 (going back to SP1) and it seems to work. But I have to cross my fingers every time I connect and still it fails occasionally. So far solved by rebooting, but who knows why? No-one, in my experience.
There seem to be so many variables in the sync process SE need to provide a connection-sensitive Help routine which can allow each person to pinpoint and correct their particular problem.

Not saying this'll work, but it worked for me when I had the same problem so it's worth a try if you haven't already...
When you've got the phone in the sync station and the status indicator shows it as connected, switch off the phone (still in the cradle) and switch it back on again.
Hopefully, after the phone has fully rebooted, the 'found new phone' wizzard will appear and, after selecting the sync settings etc. you should have full functionality.
I had to do this procedure three or four times before the PC and phone would finally connect properly everytime I put it in the cradle!
