A better explanation would be to compare linux to Symbian - both are core operating systems (Symbian for mobile, in the last several years). Just as Linux has two main GUI (graphical user interfaces; Linux = KDE & Gnome) so to does Symbian = UIQ1/2/3 & Series60.
However since the GUI's are different, significantly so too are how apps made for them incompatible crossover wise. Now, when talking about compatibility of apps regarding the same GUI; Series60 for instance then I suggest looking over at this site.

Personally i don't think Symbian will replace Java coz there are always going to be lower-end phones and manufacturers who believe Java is the way to go. Only major gripe i have is that S60 is prone to virii coz of its popularity.

I thought PalmOS cannot do multi-tasking. So how can it be smarter?
I would say new WM5 and Symbian are neck-to-neck in functionality. Only recently WM supports 3G but Symbian already have 3G support earlier.
