firmware updates often bring improvements not considered when phone was released, so Nokia owners miss out on this possibility. So it's really horses for courses. firmware updates aren't necessarily a bad thing.
Also, it means when you find a bug in your phone, you know Nokia don't care and won't be bringing out a fix, so what would you rather; a phone that will never be updated and will have the same bugs forever, or a phone that MAY need updating, but whose bugs will be addressed if it does?

I think Nokia already considered all the improvements possible that their phones can handle before releasing it. I have been a Nokia user all my life. My w800i is my first SE phone. I was happy at first because SE has an update service very easy to access. But I just came to realize Nokia doesn't need to release firmware because their phones have lived up to the expectation of their consumers.
The only reason I switched over to SE is w800's superiority over Nokia with regards to camera. (thanks to Sony Cybershot) But overall, as a phone, Nokia is much stable. It's not that I favor Nokia. I still love my w800. Pictures and videos are still superb! MP3's are better. Its just that Nokias don't have file transfer problem..

Like aya i'm kinda amused as well but for different reasons.. w800 file transfer problem? Hmm I've yet to encounter one, and mine gets hooked up to several pc's several times a day.
The only problem I have is that my 512 duo's don't magically hold 6 gigs.

My k700i was flawless too, never had an issue, passed it to a friend now because of the W800i and they haven't had an issue either.
At least
seem to be active in fixing the bugs though.

Only for the people that managed to update successfully, majority have lost their k750/w800 camera while updating via SEUS, while others can't even get their phones to work again...

Those who updated to R1N have had problems, but since when did SE tell everyone to take their perfectly working phone and update to R1N, an unknown firmware?
And the same prob aplies - people bitch when they have problems but not when they don't.
Get it into perspective....

I'd rather live with a phone perfect enough, thereby not needing updates.. than one which will keep me running helter-skelter for solutions to mistakes made by the manufacturer.
It's really disheartening reading so many posts from exhausted/frustrated people whom have spent hard earned money and are expending time, resources and sweat trying to seek solutions to newly purchased phones that can't do what the manufacturer stated..

The fact is nokia have bugs too, but Nokia users just accept the bugs as part of the phone. SE users are more demanding. Me I don't care if a phone menu is a bit slow or bluetooth locks up when pushed too hard etc. Nokia have these kinds of problems too. But user's just learn not to push it too hard or be patient when browsing menus.
Hell my K700 had a slow menu but it was still useable - I never updated the firmware although I could have done so to "fix" the slowness. I just accepted it as part of life, and still have a very fond memory of that phone (it never locked up, neither does my K750) even if it was a bit slow.
Nokia users take the same attitude to their phones; as long as the bug isn't a show killer they just accept it and get on with it.
Some users of SE phones, because they have the option to update, try to fix every little bug, thinking that each firmware is going to be a cure-all. SE don't recommend updating the phone unless you have a serious bug, but most of the peeps have updated without advice from SE to a newly released firmware version that has worse bugs than their phone's current firmware!! So SE use keen updaters as guinea pigs? So what, they never said YOU MUST UPDATE. When a serious problem does occur (like crashing on R1J), SE bring out a stable firmware that is well tested (R1L being a case in point), so I don't have a problem with their methodology.
So my advice with SE phones is to only update when you have a showkiller problem (eg: phone crashes a lot) that is specifically claimed by SE to be fixed with the latest firmware.
Many peeps update the second their phone locks up, yet rarely does a firmware version cause the phone to lock up. In my experience (which is considerable thank you) phone crashes are more often corrupt memory cards, pc bluetooth setup, and other factors unrelated to the firmware and often user related.
I have handled many Nokia's that lock up when certain combinations of actions are performed, but as I said you just learn not to do those things. Yet when SE phones do the same thing you claim they are faulty.
So before you go blaming all these peeps problems on the firmware, how about you look at it with some perspective? I'm sick of all this SE bashing. I have used them since SE was created (and Ericsson before that) and I have also setup SE phones for lot's of peeps and as far as I'm concerned this whole issue of firmware is blown way out of proportion.
