I've been getting away with 64Kbps, but I'm in the process of upgrading to 96Kbps. 64 is just a little too flat. Still it's not that bad, when you consider what 64Kbps mp3's sound like.

Just to revive this thread a bit...

I spent all evening experimenting with different codecs, starting with a complex music piece recorded in .ogg format, quality 8 (read: REALLY high quality - almost transcoded).

Sidenote - damn, I wish these devices supported .ogg. It's one of the best codecs for music available today.

So I have a W800i now. Tests were conducted both on the PC with an Audigy soundcard, and on the phone. I'll spare the details, except to say my ear is fairly tuned to artefacts in mp3 / lossy audio formats. I tested AAC from Q80 to Q150, as well as ABR and custom VBR modes. (it's really the only choice for the W800i, since you can go mp3 (bad) or AAC (better, not as good as wma or .ogg for quality compression).

Long story short, my ears were "satisfied" using the Q100 setting with dbPoweramp. I couldn't really detect any noticable improvements going up to 140 or so, at 150, some brass notes started to come clearer, but the size difference (ie, a 100 setting would give a 5mb file, the 150 setting would give maybe 8mb). 90 was "acceptable" and 80 or below was bordering on tinny, unacceptable.

I tend to get most of my music through allofmp3.com and usually buy .ogg 5 or 6 quality music, 7 or higher for stuff I really like and plan to keep for some time. I buy the higher quality rips because

a) I typically reencode them to mp3 (192kbit variable) for my Streamium stereo system (which doesn't support anything else),
b) I typically reencode them to WMA, 128 or 164kbit for my car (Phatnoise box in the trunk)
c) now, I typically reencode them to Q100 AAC files for the w800i.

Moral. Forget downloading those 160 or 192kbit crappy LAME encodings from the net. Find high quality (320kbit mp3) rips, preferably in wma or ogg, and then re-encode them to Q100 with the AAC encoder in dbpoweramp for your K750i / W800i.

Oh, last point - download the latest Disc2Phone app from Sony Ericsson. The shipping app doesn't recognize aac (.m4a) files. The current version does. You can't get the walkman software to recognize and use them without this PoS software.

good stuff mark, very handy. In my testing using dbpoweramp, I've found 96 VBR AAC (which give much smaller filesizes than Q100) adequate, and 128Kbps good. At 128Kbps, file size is still significantly smaller than Q100, however the Q100 setting offers much better clarity in complex audio sections. Ideally I'd use ABR encodes, but I'll wait until I have a 2GB memory stick

Overall, I'm satisfied with 128Kbps vbr, it's still small, is equivalent to a 192Kbps MP3 in quality, and that is good enough for my standards. 192Kbps AAC is even better, however I'm not that much of an audiophile. Still, in my testing, I've convinced myself to move from 64Kbps (which is fair quality but a lot of small detail is missing) to 128Kbps.
