So why do we have four teams who can play in euro/world cup games? Should we not just take the best players a play under Britain?
Several reasons. Why on earth would the home nations want to lose one of their biggest identifying factors these days? Why would i want to see my national team dissolved, a team that i've supported and followed from my infancy, to be replaced by a team of 9 englishmen, one welshman, one scot, and no northern Irish players? Thats the reality, if you make a "UK Select" thats what you'll get. Us celtic nations are under no illusions that that would be fair, as England currently have the best team, but why would we want to watch this when we can proudly watch a team of our own countrymen?

... and of course, we all know the referendum to remove the Queen as head of state was a big fix because the only alternative offered was a politically appointed president! so we chose the lessor of two evils although all the polls asking if the Queen should still be head of state overwhelmingly said no
if only the choice had been queen or people elected president...

Australians are Australian, you stopped being British when Australia was given control over her own affairs. As for a president; why anyone would want to install another layer of politics is beyond me!

Living in Malaysia you do have the advantage of being able to pop to Raffles relatively easily. Singapore slings in the Long Bar what?

@scotsboyuk, not entirely true as I understand it. The Queen via the Governer General still has the final say in law making and I'm sure the GG still has the power to disolve parliament as Kerr did back in the 70's
Anyway, Aussies only ever hear about the Queen really when she, or one of the other royals, makes a visit and that seems to be getting fewer and far between each visit. Its only symbolic that we want to remove the detachment but then the question of Australia remaining in the Commonwealth raises its head but I don't really know enough to get into that.
@absinthebri, I'm first gen Aussie. other than that... no comment!
Singapore Slings! yummy. I've had more than my fair share of those on my trips back and forth to Oz via Snigapore
