Handset manufacturers need low-end models in order to have a complete line-up. Obviously low-end phones are cheaper to make, too.
There is a segment of the market wanting a phone packed with the latest gadgets, like the ability to catch flies and inflate car tyres.
But, some people want a cell phone just to make calls. Shock, I know.
It's not just a matter of what consumers want either; operators are in the game too, and I would have thought they'd demand a full range from the vendors they deal with.
