Well, the bluetooth has almost 300 hundreds phones BT compatibles today.
The applications are more extensive than the Ir so i suppose that after a while the IR will be used more or less at home (remote control) but the applications regarding the onboard or having the voice will not exist anymore. Cause the bluetooth took the place of the IR in relation with the short distance. Today it is possible with BT to have data, voice and soon video.
The question of the bluetooth is depending of what we call the "interoperability factors". There is today a phone, and kit, dongles, pc or laptop and so many other applications to make that technology working during the next ten years.
The idea is to mastering the relation machine to machine, and that may depends of the tech support from each companies envolved into the BT.
Knowing the impact of the software is the key of the understanding of this technology.
I will not giving names, but some manufacturers understand better the end user than others.
The experiences of the interoperability is the strongest way to increase the capacity and the ability of this technology.
The bluetooth is the power of the informations for the end user or the resellers which experienced the troubles, and get in touch with the manufacturers to get an idea of the fault.
Bluetooth is becoming more common and some of the person know a lot.
Makes informations accessible to the end user will be the key.

neg thats absolutely Fine...But you cannot negate that Ir is still used in NASA satellites also...Bluetooth is the future and will be the only next best thing for DATA transfer..It will be a time for all applications..!
Comparing Bluetooth to Ir-DA is like comparing Mercedes Benz with a Ferrari- Logic - Merc has got the latest Luxury features and all....while The Prancing Pony comes all Speed...! Two great machines, two different functionalities, One same desitnation- Yours..!
Guess there would have been heads arguing like us when Ir-Da and Serial Port DATA cables were compared...and Even today we Have Both...! lol

Good question.
Of couse BT is "better" but I have used irda primarily to transfer pictures or phonebook entries between my phone and "old" phones. Irda's strong point is that it exists and works and is available on so many devices. Also because there's no pairing to to with consecutive excange of a code that makes irda less intrusive to use with people you do not really know than than BT.
Personally I would not feel any better with a phone that has NOT irda.
