I dont think firmware will fix hardware issues
I know that. Thank you. They covered the difference between hardware and software at university

However i'm not convinced it is entirely a hardware/dust issue. I think moving the joystick around might actually be recalibrating it or something.

I wondered about that too. Like it has an auto calibrating feature that sometimes needs a kick start.

While it could be easily dust related, nevertheless I find the joystick seems to go funny mostly when using games where joystick movements are mostly forward or up (right or up), aka platform games. This repeated biased use would skew the joystick calibration (if indeed it has auto callibration). The joystick going funny doesn't seem to correspond with dust build up or general use which further supports the callibration theory.

So I think the callibration idea is plausible.

Actually that bold part isn't entirely true The one thing I love about 's is that (well ok unless its a phone like the S700 or W900) you can use the keypad for more things. For instance in the main menu, you don't need to move the joystick to a particular option like messages, settings etc, just press the corresponding key on the keypad (1-#) as they correspond to the icon on screen.

Likewise with the menus, if you have something on screen:
Menuitem1
Menuitem2
Menuitem3
Menuitem4
Menuitem5

Then you can use the keys on the keypad to select those ones too.
The phonebooks allow you to find everything with the keys as well, or if lazy then you can use the joystick to scroll it. (I count myself in the to lazy to press the other keys camp btw )

Hehe! Me too. But it's true you don't need to use joystick if you don't like it.

My joystick's 'left' and 'up' controls are gone, but heres why its not a hardware problem..

I have exactly the same problem!
Except its my 'right' and 'down' controls that have stopped working.

Like you, when the screen fades, I can still use right and down to make it light back up again.

I was interested in what you said about the games, so I tried... and while playing Super Real Tennis, the 'right' button makes the character move right AND up. The 'down' button makes the character move down AND left.

This all started happning after a firmware upgrade to my phone (i.e., it was fine before that) Argh, such an annoying problem! There must be a way to fix it, tried re-updating the firmware, tried a master reset, NOTHING works!

There has to be something to do with how you're using your phones.

I've had plenty of SE phones with joysticks
T300, T68m, T68i, T630, K700i, W800i and NONE of them have EVER shown any problems whatsoever.

I love my SE joysticks, and I think it's one of the downfalls of my new W900. In fact I've never had a joystick problem ever, not on my V80 or C550.

Thing is at work I see loads of K750i and K700i phones with broken joysticks that people bring in for repair, and they all show one similar characteristic.
Badly treated and caked with dust.
Yet only once have I ever seen one where the joystick has actually detaches from the board itself.

I've just got a k750i with a faulty joystick, it does work but needs quite a bit of pressure to operate. I don't think it's a sw problem, seems in this case anyway that the joystick unit is worn out. Tried cleaning it and stuff, but suspect it would need replacing for it to work at it's former glory again!

Tried that '20 turns clockwise and 20 anticlockwise' with no effect, so I'd say it was often a hardware problem.

I message a lot on my k500i and use 'Down' and 'Right' directions in the joy stick a lot. I noticed that the 'Up' and 'Left' which I used much less had become un-responsive after a few days/months.

So, just as an experiment, I started using the 'Up' and 'Left' even in cases where the 'Down and 'Right' were the more-convenient options I also cut down on using the numbers keys for navigation.

Guess what? Now, the 'Up' and 'Left' responsd better than the 'Down' and 'Right' directions !!! So, cud it be a case of rolling stones gathering less moss?

Nowadays, I use all the 4 directions in the joystick so that they are exercised regularly and kept in good fitness.

This is my second post so ppls dont mind if i broke any posting etiquette

Just thought I would share my solution to this problem, I opened my K750i and decided against changing the joystick because you need a hot air pencil to remove the old one and solder the new one in place (to do it properly that is). I simply cleaned mine, I used a cotton bud soaked it in methylated spirit and then pushed this onto the top of the joystick so that it soaked inside the switch, kept doing this and moving the joystick until i thought it would make a difference. The benefit of using "meths" is that it cleans well and evaporates very quickly and doesn’t leave any residue behind.

And now the joystick works fine......JD
