@Mad_Bob: They probably went the 3-way route to save the life of the jogdial although I haven't heard of too many people complaining of messed up jogdials. The dial in my P910 was always consistent.

I think it's not only what your saying brix, but on top of that, it means they can lose some width in that area... The 5G jog required sensors top and bottom, whereas 3 way doesn't, and takes up less room...
The 3-way + Back button, is an adequate solution. I wouldn't knock it before trying it out...
