I agree that for SE to effectively compete with Nokia they have to have a strong budget series. The specs of the J-series don't matter much until SE actively promote it. No one I know has even heard of the J series to begin with. It really comes down to marketing.

Having got fed up with all the technology they stuff into phones now, with an ever decreasing battery life, I got rid of my K800i and went to Nokia for the first time (until SE release a better entry level phone), I did look at the J100, but for a cheaper price and better spec I got the Nokia 1110 for £40 and the battery life is great being a 900mAh

SE have already released many cheaper mid/low end phones. SE don't want to get the look of Nokia where they are most of the time asssociated with cheap and simple phones that like to just sell by the masses, with a few exceptions. SE want to be different and be seen as a quality and genrally pricey phone make. Its like trying to get Ferrari suddenly start making some Ferrari branded Skoda's or Volvo's for the people that can't quite afford the real Ferrari's. There are plenty of cheaper SE phones to buy, so this I think is not an area that SE need to look at.

@shaliron - That's exactly what I was saying and the point I was making! From what I've seen the current J series doesn't seem to be very sucessful, something like the Z300 is the way forward, and a 'basic' business phone like the 6030. SE don't have to sacrifice their quality image to make a budget phone!
Make it reliable, ergonomic, and well designed!

yeah, I gotta admit when think about it, the J series is pretty ugly and cheap. But I guess I think more of K300/K500 as the low end, the budget low end is only starting to be addressed. But sammy_boy you did did mention phones with vga cameras which is not quite budget. If you include phones with "only" vga cams, then that includes K300 et al.

The low end of the K series is a little old, but those models are being replaced now.
I actually have come around to you guys way of thinking a bit, but I still think SE are making headway in that area. A year ago similar discussion were being held about how SE would never bring out a decent choice of handsets like Nokia do, but look at them now, compared to before. So I think they have a good handle on what their most important market segments are and how to address them. They are taking a slow methodical approach. That's SE all the way.

EDIT - i just looked through the list (well selected sony ericsson at the top
) and the J100i came up for £26.99!!! with £25 credit!!!!! that means the phone costs all of £1.99!!! - do these phones basically act the same way as the older
Sony Ericsson models did, such as the t200? - do they have built in games (e.g. non-java?) - im rather tempted by the cheapness of the phone
- for a backup rather than buying the dreaded Nokia 110-0/1 lol! - well the 1101 does have java
but then again...its a mono screen lol

I found the 1100 much better than J200. 1100 has a much easy on the eyes screen whereas J200 has a very low quality colored screen which makes it difficult to read. Plus, 1100 has a solid construction, just like the 3310.

hmm...never tryed - but imo 1100 looks crap really - whereas the J200 could be good. also, i think that sony ericsson phones are more luxary, and you need to take more care over them - and nokia phones, aren't that good - but they stay together well.

phones designed like the T68, T610(without cam), ...
they should have every basic feature like the J230 but should have bluetooth.
this could lead to more higher sales of their bluetooth headsets, cause SE isn't the best seller in that.
