You just need the software and the usb cable that comes with the phone. It's not totally riskfree (neither is Nokias update service by the sound of it but most people have no problems with it). There are various guides to help e.g.

you are right Nokia have missed out IMO the best N series or possibly the best nokia out so far although i havent got it, i am planning to get it because of the features, looks etc.
