I think that this should be very possible by now, look at the kodak with 10x optical zoom in a tiny thin case. One of sharps phones have 2x optical in a flip phone. I hope SE makes a phone with it soon because it would mean no need for a dedicated digi cam imo. I have a k750i and the pics from that are perfect for printing. A few more mega pixels and optical zoom would be very good.

Would also be nice if the next cybershot phone could take decent video clips & also shoot them in the DARK.

@frajam88 - The Kodak has two lenses which is how it manages to have 10x optical, both working to split the range. The Panasonic TZ1 on the other hand has one lens covering the whole range. So basically the technology is here, the real issue is size at the moment.
Here's a diagram detailing the 10x optical from panasonic. Taken from
megapixel.net (an excellent source of information) IMHO one lens is more pratical, however a 10x zoom yes possible, the space required and price would be a governing factor at present.

Thanks for the technical info marlonski. So the general concensus of opinion is that optical zoom (married with a higher pixel count) is the way forward.

i don't think we'r going to see 5 megapixel from SE this year
maybe 3.2 megapixel with optical zoom and better video quality

@dcbastable - your welcome mate
I would be happy with 3mp and optical zoom. I like what they have done with the K800 in terms of pre-set modes for lanscapes etc. This can help get the best out of your camera rather than leaving it in auto mode.
For me a little more manual control would be very nice and make the camera a little more usuable. Being able to alter the aperture etc would be great. That said, as it's a camera phone we're talking about then good pre-set modes and optical zoom along with the K800's flash and not forgetting image stabilization, which comes in very handy when using a small device would be just peachy.
Basically the only thing lacking the K800 mentioned above is the optical zoom so we're nearly there!

This is certanly more what I'm hoping for.
Faster shutter speed (from time it takes to turn the camera on - to capture) is also up there ony my list!

I really don't think that cost will be too big an obsticle if SE play there cards right, which they normally do when they launch a new model.
