What version of software do you have?????
I have R1CB001 and I must say that I`m very disappointed about the K800`s volume.
On k750,W800 and W810, cristal sound, lot of power, great superbass with hpm70, try give volume to your K800 and you will see that the volume for music (same melody and same earphones-hpm70) is by far too slow.Give volume to your K750,W800,W810 and you will see big diference.K750,w800,w810 performs like phones as welll as good music players,K800 doesn`t.I`m very disappointed with K800`s volume in earphones and I can`t use my k800 as a walkman.
I`m not the only one with this poin of view!!!!!!
pls try to compare with k750,w800,w810 I am sure you`ll see big difference

I had a W810, now I have a K610. The volume is about the same. I tested a K800 in a shop a few weeks ago and the volume was almost equal (maybe a bit less). I always used the same headset (Sennheiser PXC300).
In terms of soundquality the W810 was worse because of the hissing noise. Maybe my ears are too good because I never used something like MegaBass in my life
but for me this hiss was too audible all the time.
K800 and K610 have good sound quality, very clear and too loud for me at 60%.
Maybe there are different hardware versions of the K800? Because I cannot believe, that so many people complain about the low volume and sound quality of the K800/K610 and I don't. And I'm very, very critical about sound-quality.

well, maybe just wait for the new firmware which should be anytime soon. if there is no improvement for you, then take it to a service centre.

! I'm working at a hearing aid company and I was curious: I asked the guy at the measurement department to measure the output of my K610 with an in-the-ear-model measuring equipment.
At 60% he measured 86dB, at 80% 92db, at 100% it was 103dB. That you should not do more than 5 minutes to the ears!
92 dB is very loud already and should not be done longer than 30 or 40 minutes without any damage permanent.
86 dB by the way is tolerable for 3 or 4 hours. That's how it is and there is no "getting used to" - except if you set this equal to "doing damage"
. There are certain physical and biological limitations to the ears which are the same for all people.

But I agree with your point. I think it's the same as the K750 all over again where peeps complained about the volume level, yet I personally could never see what they are on about. The K700 volume was too soft, but the K750 is just like any other mp3player imho.
The other factor to consider is that audio device manufacturers are pressured by consumer lobby groups to ensure that the potential for hearing damage is minimised. They don't want to be seen to be causing hearing loss in their customers. This has always been an issue with portable audio devices from the early days of cassette walkmans (and similar).
So you will never see the phone that can be turned up high enough to do instant damage. Imho, the most you will ever get is a max volume level that you can listen to for 5 minutes (one song) without incurring permanent hearing damage (in the average person).
That means consumers can listen to the odd song at max volume, but to be sensible should use about 70%-80% volume for normal listening (at the most, 65% is better.)
And as far as AUDIO QUALITY goes, the K750 has incredible fidelity for a portable device when you use the maximum 192Kbps bitrate and a decent set of headphones
When it's TOO LOUD, you can't hear how good this device is unless you have decent headphones. With the HPM-70, audio quality is excellent up to about 80% volume, then distortion ruins it.
So I think the audio quality, as opposed to volume level, on the K800 is probably as good as any of SE's mp3player phones (including K and W series)

I absolutely agree. And about consumer lobby: yes - I remember the iPod being in the news, because it could cause ear damage. After some firmware update it was limited to 102dB. Now there are tools in the internet to switch this limitation off - stupid!
So if someone had a W810 and now the K800 is too low on the volume, then I guess it's a hardware related problem. I'll try to find a K800 and a W810 I can test the same way.
Back to topic: yes - the K800 is good to use as a mp3 player.

I just noticed something on my K750 (W80 firmware) - the PlayNow screen doesn't let you browse files in the current playlist by up/down joystick if java is running in the background. If JAVA isn't running it works fine. I wonder if that means K800 is the same?
Is there any chance you had a JAVA app running in background when you tried that?

in now playing you can't scroll through the songs.. it's quite annoying.. has the new firwmare really addressed this? whereas the walkaman app you can use up/down in the now playing.. to see the playlist the k800 only has left and right for changing songs
also it does not have megabass
otherwise music quality and volume or pretty much the same to all the walkphones i;ve tried.. the hiss is gone, the sound is clearer and they've added fadeout functions between songs and when you get interupted like sms.
using a2dp the sound quality is nice and loud as well..

That's why I wanted to know if peeps have JAVA apps running in the background when they try the playnow screen on K800.
It's a long shot I know, but I just wondered with Java multi-tasking, peeps might have some background apps running....
