Okay..but we know the problems are firmware rather than hardware. Therefore, as long as Orange allow updates via SEUS, then this should all be correctable.

Does anyone know if Orange have provided firmware updates in the past for Orange SE phones via SEUS?

Jonathan

They have ineed. I've upgraded my P910's firmware twice using SEUS since I've had it. Just like now, the first time i upgraded up was because of the buggy orange firmware on the phone in the first place

This news is a little disappointing for me, I'm due an upgrade with orange and was going to take the opportunity to try out the P990, despite all of the other bad reports. Looks like I'll be going for a different device instead!

I've lost count of the amount of times I've been into a phone shop only to be told "oh, there's a problem with the handset and it's been recalled by the manufacturer/network" 9 times out of 10 that's complete BS and it's because said shop/network can't get any stock and they don't want me to go somewhere else because the inference is I will be buying a duff handset.

I'm not saying that's what's happening here...and with Oranges piss poor track record recently I expect the OP is right.

PS never had any branding issues on my Orange P900

[edit] free phone and several months free line rental here?! They must be hard to shift...and it says CLEARANCE STOCK!!

Yet the webpage showed the P990i out of stock earlier this week.
Now it's back in stock.
It's been missing off the upgrade phones pages for a good couple of weeks now.

Rumours of supposed "internal" messages at Orange followed by loads of speculation as to why they've pulled it and whether they are having wrangles with SE is just daft.

There's big demand for the P990i and we see people daily post on these boards that they just got one, via different routes, phone/shop/online, upgrade/new etc.

Am I the only person to get the Orange P990i on upgrade on the first day it was available, and am happy with it?!?

@cheekynige

I'd think so. I am really fed up with mine. The constant crashes/locks that need a restart to re-enable (like Messaging, Web -- fundamental uses of a phone like this), calendar just sticking on 'January 1st' whenever it's opened, etc etc. Are you actually using your phone?

@Dogmann and @Sainty: Dogmann's long post was muy interesante, even if some more abbreviation was possible.

I'd like to take matters to another level. Debranding will not eliminate RAM-quantity and RAM-management issues: the root of most P990 gripes referred to ad nauseum in several forums, and affects even unbranded P990s.

The consensus seems to be that SE indicates a week-48 (end-November) firmware upgrade that may relieve the situation, but that a full resolution might well demand either more RAM (different or modified hardware) or execute-in-place (different or modified OS).

Regardless of technical details, the issue is Do we have a product fit for purpose as advertised and sold?
SE's Overview - - Mobile phone - Sony Ericsson P990i begins

The P990i takes effective communications to new heights. Ever wish you could leave your PC at the office while travelling? Now you can.
I don't expect to use a phone to edit a video, stream FM radio and build a 50-frame MMS while downloading pictures (though some might). But surely, if I'm browsing a mobile-friendly web page, I should be able to
copy a text snippet from the page,
create an SMS message,
paste the text into the message,
open my Contacts for a number to receive the message
send the message, and
return to the web page
without the phone going crazy, even if a scheduled email download starts and I've previosly used used system functions like the or Application Menu Control Panel. That shouldn't be too much to ask from the £500 most effective mobile office in your hand, which promises to let youQuote:read and send email, edit and send email attachments and have always-on access to everything you needandQuote:view entire websites and enjoy the speed you’re used toThose are a few of SE's promises (but I guess you already know that). It seems that SE is guilty of making and promoting a product that does not meet its description, and knows, or should have known, of the defects. Not to mention the rock-bottom price (ha-ha).

My point, especially to Doogman: Does this sound like class-action lawsuit material for recall or refunds from Sony through our respective dealers? Sony demanded our money. I feel we should demand a functioning product or our moey back.

@mlittle

I'm certainly not a poweruser of the P990i yet, there are hardly any uiq3 apps out yet, but I do have TomTom 6 on there which is pretty intensive.

Last saturday, whilst using tomtom a phone call came through, which i took and then hung up. Tomtom was still running and was able to continue giving me directions etc. You could see it was slightly taxing it, but it managed it. So given all the terrible reports about the phone I was quite impressed lol.

I've just had a play with the calendar, looked at jan 1st, made an appointment then, clsoed it and it reopened it and it's not stuck on it or anything, it opened at todays month and day, as you'd expect?

I've browsed a fair few webpages and its never crashed, that includes full html and mobile friendly, they are all pretty speedy - granted the responsiveness of the UI isn't what I'd like, generally a bit sluggish (unless you've played a video clip before hand!)

Not used email on it yet, or messenger features, but sms/web/camera/calendar/phone/radio/video player/tomtom are all very reliable!

*edit: agile messenger doesn't work fully yet. It conencts and displays contacts but quits on the menus, kern error 3... aplha software though...

Hi koolezt,

A class action lawsuit is a bit too American as i think very few here are in the USA. The initial solution i proposed is for those that are not being allowed to update to the newer firmware that is already available to the Sim free handsets due to BS from their Network.

You raise a very interesting point re not fit for purpose and demanding a refund from SE's sales channels and the action you are suggesting is something i recommended a long time ago. Only to be told you have to expect a few niggles it's a brand new OS which will get fixed with firmware upgrades. There also does seem to be some who are able to use most of their phones functionality if not all with some memory management work.

My previous position on this and still is unless people start takeing the action you are advocating and stop letting the manufacturers get away with it nothing will change. Although i can not believe that SE are not aware of the number of returns due to problems plus of course the fact that not all Networks are even prepared to release the phone on there Network how ever much their customers still want it and of course not forgetting all these threads on the various forums. I hold the same opinion as you that there is only so much firmware upgrades can do and also doubt they will be able to resolve all the issues but only time will tell who is right on this. At the end of the day it is for each individual to decide on the action they take. I was only trying to make people aware of some of the options available to them.

Marc

by the way i called Orange today to complain about the missing RSS reader since it is in the instructions

operator no1. the feature is on the CD...err no its not
operator no2. the feature is not available due to an error in the firmware...hm probably right, he also suggested to replace my phone! errr....no!
operator 3. this issue is NOT known as she couldn't find it in the issues log, but she will raise a ticket with the technical department and they will give me a call back (yeah right, ive heard that before!)

i spoke to all these operator in a single call, i was diverted and then diverted again and again.

Operator no2 seemed more in touch with reality and how smartphones worked as he mentioned that Orange is very slow in releasing updates and i would be better off if i went to a SonyEricsson to update the device manually instead of waiting for Orange to release the FW on SEUS
